  • September 6, 2017 – Vassar College Jewish Student (Jesser) “These dynamics are seen here at Vassar as well. My freshman year, the debate over the BDS movement led to rampant anti-Semitism that the Vassar Student Association failed to adequately address, in which Jewish students felt unsafe being on campus. This year, in the wake of Charlottesville, it will likely be brought back.” Read more
  • October 26, 2016 – Vassar College Jewish Student (Anonymous) – [When asked about his stance on the Vassar’s chapter of BDS] – “I don’t think it’s the answer considering that its members have bullied people and excused fashionable antisemitism among their ranks. They deny the existence of a Jewish culture, peoplehood and ethnicity too, which some people get irked by. And often they don’t actually know that much about Israel at all when you talk to them.” Read more
  • March 30, 2016 – Vassar Jewish Student (Jesse) – “BDS supporters took every opportunity to imply that opposing their brand of activism is racist; while every time antisemitism was mentioned it was met with laughter and mockery. Multiple at-large members were in tears while reading statements on how the debate has affected them, and were met with BDS supporters pointing and laughing. While it was not loud enough to interrupt their statements, it was noticed and commented on by members of the audience…. I do think that there is a great deal of antisemitism embedded in the BDS movement and in Students for Justice in Palestine…” Read more
  • March 15, 2016 – Vassar College Jewish Student (Jason) – “In my three years at Vassar College…I have watched Jewish friends bullied into silence by aggressive anti-Israel activists who call the Jews racists. I have seen many anti-Semitic comments from fellow students on social media. Although I have had many good experiences at Vassar and have made many friends, it can be uncomfortable to be Jewish here, especially if one supports Israel.” Read more
  • March 15, 2016 – Vassar College Jewish Student (Jason) – “They did not stay away because they were busy or because Vassar lacks anti-BDS students. • March 2, 2016 – Vassar College Jewish Student (Jesser) – “The reason that Jewish parents are afraid to send their students to Vassar isn’t because they’re conservative, it’s because they’ve seen what effect movements like this [BDS] have at similar college campuses throughout the country, and they’re afraid that something like that can happen at Vassar. Frankly, so am I.” Read more
  • February 26, 2016 – Vassar College Jewish Student (Sophie) – “…many times at Vassar anti-Israel sentiment has crossed that line, and it has become harder to differentiate nuanced criticisms of Israel and anti-Semitism much less the arguments for an end to Israel as a Jewish state in any form.As a student I am disappointed by the unwillingness to have a two-sided dialogue on BDS or the anti-Semitism permeating much of this issue.” Read more

  • February 11, 2016 -Vassar College Jewish Student (Jesse) – “When organizations such as SJP make broad statements condemning all Zionists as racists, not only are they attempting to marginalize and demonize their opposition, but they are sending a message to the community that it is okay to think less of a Jew who defends Israel’s right to exist.” Read more
  • May 2014, Jewish Vassar College Student, as Quoted in the Comments Section (NK) – “This year, SJP has made Vassar an unsafe environment for me and for other Jewish students. From their harassment of students participating in the spring break trip, to the Nazi incident and anti-Zionist rhetoric about ethnic cleansing that verges on blood libel, SJP has done everything in its power to make Vassar an unsafe space for Jews.” Read more
  • September 2014, Jewish Vassar College Student (Sarah) “My Israel identity is important to me. It is super intimidating to walk into the College Center and feel that that my core identity is being questioned. It’s really difficult to come to terms with hearing that a place you call your homeland shouldn’t exist.”  Read more
  • September 2014, Jewish Vassar College Student (Samantha) “A few weeks ago, I was invited to a pro-Palestinian rally…[O]ut of concern that the event would have placed all of the blame on Israel while excusing Hamas and glossing over the moral complexities, I resisted my temptation to attend. [N]ow I am returning to my college campus, an environment where the Israel-Palestine discussion is hugely polarized and devoid of nuance. Many students label themselves “pro-Israel” or “pro-Palestine” and close their eyes to the other’s humanity and right to self-determination. ”  Read more

    TARGETING JEWISH STUDENTS AND STAFF: HARASSMENT4/20/16 – The BDS Coalition publicized a Bias report by a J Street member that was supposed to remain anonymous to protect the student involved. By doing so, the BDS coalition resorted to an ad hominem attack on a Jewish student.

    HISTORICAL
    4/6/16 – A swastika was found on a sign on a student’s door.
    HARASSMENT;
    DENIGRATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (BDS VOTE)
    3/6/16 – Vassar Student Association (VSA) voted to pass the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) resolution by a vote of 15 in favor and 7 opposed. The organization did not pass the concurrently submitted BDS amendment, which would have amended the student association bylaws to prohibit the use of student funds to purchase goods from Israeli companies or companies that support Israel. This amendment needed a 2/3 majority but failed by a vote of 12 in favor to 10 opposed. A Jewish student who attended the BDS vote outlined antisemitic activity by pro-BDS students during the meeting, stating, “One Jewish student talked about how the BDS campaign had invoked every anxiety nightmare she had ever had. She was crying as she spoke. Pro-BDS students laughed at her.” The student also remarked that at the meeting, “another Jewish student talked about Israel’s founding in the wake of the Holocaust. He was immediately accused of using the Holocaust as a political tool to justify the “genocide” of another people.” The student says that at the meeting’s conclusion, “one non-Jewish council member said she felt ‘very complicit in the anti-Semitism that was occurring tonight.'”
    GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
    HISTORICAL
    2/18/16 – A carving of a swastika was found on a resident’s door in Noyes House.
    VERBAL ASSAULT;
    DEMONIZATION;
    HISTORICAL
    2/5/16 – Statements posted on YikYak were antisemitic. One user commented “f*ck Jews” on a post defending Israel. A Jewish student expressed in an op-ed that there were other statements said by users such as, “your just a retard and so are Zionists” and “Zionism is a plague of mankind. These Jews stand around throwing this is antisemitic and that’s antisemitic” and “I’ve never met a Jew who didn’t think Israel is their home land. Jews through terrorism have kept Palestinians locked like animals in their home.” The Jewish student also said that the same commenter insinuated that the Jews, and the Jewish student personally for being a Jew, should evaluate what we “do wrong in Palestine and other places.”
    DENIGRATION;
    DENYING JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION
    11/18/15 – An op-ed published in the student newspaper by a Vassar student denigrated the Taglit-Birthright program which Vassar Jewish students participate in by calling the trip “racist,” accused students who go on the trip of committing “a crime,” and encouraged students to sign an open statement entitled “Renounce Birthright,” which falsely accuses Israel of “apartheid” and racism, denies the relationship between Zionism and Judaism, rejects Zionism, and calls for the right of return of Palestinian refugees, which would effectively mean the end of the Jewish state.
    ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: DEMONIZATION9/28/16 – Professor Joshua Schreier published an op-ed in the school paper that demonized Israel, accusing it of being an “oppressive and racist regime” and it’s supporters, including invited speaker Bret Stephens, of “pinkwashing.” Pinkwashing is a demonizing term that means malevolently representing Israel as a safe haven for LGBQT people in order to hide Israel’s “crimes.”
    DELEGITIMIZATION9/22/16 – SJP held the event “Reflecting on Bret Stephens: A Talk Back with Professor Schreier.” The advertisement for the event delegitimized Israel, falsely accusing it of “state violence and apartheid.”
    DENY JEWS SELF DETERMINATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (BDS VOTE)
    4/28/16 – The Student body voted on a divestment resolution that endorsed the right of return which would effectively eliminate Israel as well as a spending bill to boycott spending on Israeli products. The resolution was sponsored by Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace. The BDS resolution was rejected 573 Against, 503 For. The spending resolution was defeated 601 Against, 475 For.
    DENY JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALL FOR BDS)
    4/20/16 – Jewish Voice for Peace published an article in the school newspaper entitled, “BDS vital step toward colonial resistance.” In the article, the authors accused Israel of “ongoing colonization of Arab lands” and called for the right of return of Palestinians which would effectively eliminate Israel as a Jewish state.
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    4/1/16 – The BDS Coalition launched a referendum to reiterate their reasons for supporting BDS explaining “if Vassar students support BDS, then we should support it entirely: we should withhold VSA funding from companies and products that contribute to the expansion of settler-colonialism.” They published a petition for individuals to sign and show support for the referendum. The referendum stated, “VSA monies cannot be used to purchase items from Sabra, Tribe, Ben & Jerry’s, Hewlett-Packard Company, Ahava, General Electric, Eden Springs, Motorola, Caterpillar, G4S, and Elbit Systems.”
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    2/17/16 – SJP distributed pamphlets entitled, “Boycotts Work: An Interview with Omar Barghouti,” which contained an interview of Barghouti that appeared in Electronic Intifada. In the interview, Barghouti delegitimized Israel, calling it an “apartheid state” based on “settler colonialism,” and he endorsed the academic boycott of Israel.
    CONDONING TERRORISM;
    DENYING JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION
    2/11/16 – SJP at Vassar adverstised in a Facebook post that they will be selling t-shirts with an image of convicted hijacker Leila Khaled holding a gun with the caption “Resistance is not Terrorism” among other apparel by a company called Existence is Resistance where all proceeds will go towards supporting “resistance.” The message of the SJP Vassar Facebook post stated, “Check out our friends at Existence is Resistance!!! They will be selling sweet fucking antiZionist gear at our events. 100% of profits goes towards organizing Palestinian resistance #ExistenceisResistance”
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    2/11/16 – The Grassroots Alliance for Alternative Politics (GAAP) released a statement endorsing BDS stating, “The Israeli State and its occupation of Palestinian homelands violates basic human rights such as the right to self-determination and nationality, perpetuates horrific violence on both state and interpersonal levels, and continues the historical tradition of racist imperialism (amongst other atrocities). We support BDS as a means to express our solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle against an oppressive force.”
    CONDONING TERRORISM;
    DEMONIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (BDS EVENT)
    2/3/16 – Women and Gender Studies Professor Jasbir Puar gave a lecture titled “Inhumanist Biopolitics: How Palestine Matters.” She began by encouraging the college to boycott Israel and saying, “We need BDS as part of organized resistance and armed resistance in Palestine as well.” She further expressed demonizing statements against Israel, including that it “assassinates” teenagers, harvests organs, and deliberately prevents resources from reaching Gaza in order to “maim” and “stunt” the growth of Palestinians. The talk was sponsored by a number of departments, including Jewish Studies, Political Science, and International Studies, as well as Africana Studies, English, and Women’s Studies.
    DENYING JEWS SELF-DETERMINIATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    2/1/16 – SJP and JVP combined with other student groups to create a coalition, the Vassar Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Coalition, and launched a divestment resolution campaign that calls on Vassar “to boycott and divest from the main colonizing force in Israel/Palestine, Zionism, until such an agreement is reached.” By targeting Zionism for BDS, this resolution engages in denying Jews self-determination. Furthermore, the resolution states that no student funds shall be used in the puchase of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream because the company sells to Israeli Jewish settlement customers in the West Bank “while apartheid ensues in historic Palestine.” By falsly accusing Israel of apartheid, the resolution delegitimizes Israel.
    DEMONIZATION11/12/15 – Prof. Yehezkel Landau, Associate Professor of Interfaith Relations and Director of the Building Abrahamic Partnerships program at Hartford Seminary (CT), and Imam Abdullah Antepli, adjunct professor of Islamic Studies at Duke University, gave a joint presentation on November 12 described as a “Conversation about Israel/Palestine.” This event was sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of Religious & Spiritual Life (RSL), the RSL Forum for Inter-Religious Dialogue, Africana Studies, Jewish Studies and the Department of Religion. At the event, according to one attendee, the Iman remarked that to Muslims, “Zionism is a painful form of racism.”
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    3/5/15 – As part of the SJP-sponsored Israel Apartheid Week, students stood near an “End Israeli Apartheid” presentation and held up signs that read “Zionism is Racism” and “Another Jew Acknowledging Apartheid.”
    DENYING JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (BDS EVENT)
    3/3/15 – SJP hosted a talk by Professor Sa’ed Atshan, entitled “On Hope and Heroes: Nonviolence and Resilience in Israel/Palestine,” as part of Israeli Apartheid Week at Vassar. During his talk, Atshan falsely accused Israel of being an “apartheid” state, advocated for the elimination of the Jewish state and its replacement by an Arab state, and promoted the BDS movement, emphasizing it as “the most effective form of non-violence.” The talk was co-sponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace at Vassar College, Middle Eastern Students Collective, Political Science Department, Religion Department, International Studies Program, Jewish Studies Program, Asian Studies Program, Africana Studies Program, Middle East Crisis Response, and Mid-Hudson BDS.
    BDS ACTIVITY: CALLS FOR BDS4/12/17 – The Editorial Board of the school newspaper published an article in opposition to a student’s position against the Vassar Student Association becoming political and engaging in BDS. The editorial board piece argued that VSA is already, and should remain, a political entity, and BDS is justified because it “improves the lives of” students on campus, stating, “arguing that the VSA should be apolitical because of the possibility of a BDS debate resurfacing minimizes the experiences of people of color and other marginalized communities on this campus who need a political student government that can actually improve their lives on campus.”
    CALL FOR BDS4/20/16 – Jewish Voice for Peace tabled on campus in support of BDS, and shared material supporting BDS.
    BDS EVENT4/18/16 – SJP held the event, “Know Your Rights: Legal Workshop with Palestine Legal” where, according to the advertisement for the event, participants learned about the legalities of boycotts.
    CALLS FOR BDS3/5/16 – SJP held the event, “There is a Field.” The advertisement for the event stated that after the event SJP and JVP would host a talk-back to discuss, “the student body’s deliberations about endorsing the call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israel.”
    BDS EVENT3/2/16 – SJP, Poder Latinx de Vassar and MeChA held the event, “Understanding Colonial Occupation: POC Engaging with the BDS Resolution and Palestine” to learn about the “reasons for BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions)”
    BDS EVENT2/28/16 – Student government debates BDS resolution in anticipation of the March 6 vote.
    BDS EVENT2/23/16 – SJP held the event, “The Case for BDS” to learn about Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions from Israel.
    CALL FOR BDS2/17/16 – SJP and JVP hosted the event, “Concerning Violence: Resisting Occupation and Colonization” which involved a movie screening of the film “Concerning Violence.” The Facebook page advertisement for the event included a call to BDS stating to, “Read about the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Coalition working toward decolonization at Vassar: http://vsa.vassar.edu/orgs/vassarsjp/”
    BDS EVENT2/4/16 – SJP held the event, “BDS and Pizza–FRESHMEN HANGOUT” to talk about BDS.
    CALLS FOR BDS10/1/15 – Vassar SJP claimed victory after receiving an email from a Campus Dining official promising that the Retreat will stop selling Sabra Hummus. BDS EVENT9/16/15 – Angela Davis delivered a talk at Vassar College, and at the end of her talk she promoted BDS and encouraged Jewish students to join Jewish Voice for Peace, an anti-Zionist organization which champions the BDS movement. Davis’ talk was sponsored by the Women’s Studies Program, the Office of the President, and the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, and co-sponsored by the Departments of Anthropology, English, Film, Greek and Roman Studies, Hispanic Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology; the Programs in Africana Studies, American Studies, International Studies, and Urban Studies; and by the ALANA, LGBTQ and Women’s Centers.

The series was designed to directly engage up to 75 students in discussions about the relationships between those three forms of oppression and the broader sociocultural meanings of those interactions. These workshops are especially relevant given recent campus climate conditions, epitomized in the controversy surrounding BDS. Workshop leaders Talia Cooper and Sonia Alexander presented the session on intersectional antisemitism, the first event in the series. Cooper reflected, “I think we really got the message that students did not feel that they were being heard around a lot of topics that were affecting their lives and that students, when they talk about it, want to be supported by the Administration. It sounds like continuing to have some of these conversations will be really great for the campus.”)

I have seen Jewish students profiled and singled out at a BDS meeting. I have felt the icy silence that reigns in some departments…Given these patterns, I find it random, facetious and, yes, anti-Semitic, that so many at Vassar choose to engage in political activism by means of a barrage of discourse about boycotting Israel….Anti-Jewish speech off and on campus is very real, and it is starting to have long-term effects.”)

The main problem in terms of administration, and even amongst the student body, is even having Arab voices heard when it comes to issues of racism against us, which is a privilege many students at this school already possess.”)

Prompted by an inquiry by the Daily News Editorial Board, school administrators discovered that Puar had again set a no-recording condition. Although Fordham President Rev. Joseph McShane has made clear that, as an institution, the school condemns much of Puar’s outlook on Israel, the university had granted her a podium as a matter of free expression. Security was on hand for the talk. But, upholding “academic transparency,” McShane properly would not facilitate Puar’s attempt to limit the wide dissemination of her ideas. Noting that the lack of an official recording at Vassar opened Puar to mischaracterizations, he directed aides to inform Puar she could speak only if she was recorded and the recording was made public. He added that more than 90 percent of Palestinians do not know what BDS is, let alone believe in the cause. He suggested that the solution to the conflict should be solved by the Israelis and the Palestinians with the intervention of the outside forces. “I think that we the Palestinians also should have to take responsibility towards our own future. I think that we the Palestinians are still holding the key for a better economic future for our moment.” He went on to assert that instead, through economic growth, the state will be able to solve its conflicts.’)

Most notably, one user commented “f*ck Jews” on a post defending Israel… But that wasn’t all. Later on in the same conversation, that individual clarified that they didn’t mean f*ck all Jews, just the ones who support Israel, and fully embraced that this somehow made their comment acceptable. That same day, another commenter on Yik Yak used similar antisemitic language, engaging in statements such as “your just a retard and so are Zionists” and “Zionism is a plague of mankind. These Jews stand around throwing this is antisemitic and that’s antisemitic” and “I’ve never met a Jew who didn’t think Israel is their home land. Jews through terrorism have kept Palestinians locked like animals in their home.” That same commenter insinuated that the Jews, and me personally for being a Jew, should evaluate what we “do wrong in Palestine and other places.”)

    Israel National News – US professor: Israel assassinates teens, harvests organs
    (Description note – Women and Gender Studies Professor Jasbir Puar gave a lecture titled “Inhumanist Biopolitics: How Palestine Matters.” She began by encouraging the college to boycott Israel and saying, “We need BDS as part of organized resistance and armed resistance in Palestine as well.” She further expressed demonizing statements against Israel, including that it “assassinates” teenagers, harvests organs, and deliberately prevents resources from reaching Gaza in order to “maim” and “stunt” the growth of Palestinians. The talk was sponsored by a number of departments, including Jewish Studies, Political Science, and International Studies, as well as Africana Studies, English, and Women’s Studies.)

    (Description note, “Further, the saturation of spatial and temporal stratum in Palestine demonstrates the use of technologies of measure to manufacture a “remote control” occupation, one that produces a different version of Israeli “home invasions” through the maiming and stunting of population. If Gaza, for example, is indeed the world’s largest “open air prison” and an experimental lab for Israeli military apparatuses, infrastructural chaos, and metric manipulation, what kinds of fantasies (about power, about bodies, about resistance, about politics) are driving this project?”)

    Vassar BDS – Vassar Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Resolution
    (Description note – SJP and JVP combine with other student groups to create a coalition, the Vassar Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Coalition, and launch a divestment resolution campaign that includes, “We call on Vassar to boycott and divest from the main colonizing force in Israel/Palestine, Zionism, until such an agreement is reached.” By targeting Zionism for BDS, this resolution engages in denying Jews self-determination. Furthermore, the resolution states that no student funds shall be used in the purchase of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream because the company sells to Israeli Jewish settlement customers in the West Bank “while apartheid ensues in historic Palestine.” By falsly accusing Israel of apartheid, the resolution delegitimizes Israel.)

    (Description note, “Students for Justice in Palestine, however, disagreed. “We don’t oppose dialogue; we oppose dialogue-centric organizations, like the ones that the speakers at this lecture are members of.,” they said. “Palestinians and Israeli do not need to sit-down and talk to achieve mutual understanding. In the context of ending the conflict, Palestinians only need to know that they are occupied and that Israel occupies them—and every Palestinian knows this already. So it is Israel that must understand that it is the occupier.”… Students for Justice in Palestine said, however, that they do not feel the College does justice to the issue. “The College as an institution has failed to not only acknowledge the human rights violations of Israel, but also to provide the necessary resources to combat these abuses, such as more information on its investments,” the organization said. They went on, “Moreover, we do believe that this is a role of an educational institution. After all, Vassar certainly touts the notion that an education should foster a belief in our common humanity. How can Vassar speak of the dignity of all human life, yet stand silent and promote ignorance around blatant human rights abuses?”)

    SJP FACEBOOK POST – “VICTORY!!!!! Campus Dining has promised to STOP SELLING SABRA HUMMUS!!!!!
    …After speaking with Campus Dining, SJP received an email promising that the Retreat will stop selling Sabra Hummus, once its supplies end by this Friday. Shelves will be re-stocked by Cedar’s Hommus. SJP will be meeting later with Campus Dining to ensure that no other products that support Israeli apartheid will be found in the Retreat. Sabra Hummus has been targeted by the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement because of their complicity in human rights violations in historic Palestine. In 2005, over 170 Palestinian political parties, organizations, trade unions and movements endorsed a call to BDS from the State of Israel and companies that are complicit in the human rights violations taking place in Historic Palestine until: 1. Israel ends it’s occupation and colonization of all Arab lands occupied in June 1967 and dismantling the Wall. 2. Israel recognizes the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality 3. Israel respects, protects, and promotes the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN Resolution 194. Boycotting Sabra Hummus, however, is just one part of our work against apartheid in historic Palestine. As Vassar students, we are obligated to end Vassar’s complicity in and take a principled stand against Israeli apartheid. To be indifferent is to stand with the oppressors. We will not stop until the fundamental human rights of Palestinians to live with freedom and dignity is recognized. #‎FreePalestine #‎BDS #‎BoycottSabra #‎SJP

    The Washington Free Beacon – Vassar College Says Ban on Israeli Foods ‘A Mistake; Dining department banned Israeli hummus brand Sabra (Reverses Ban)
    (Description note, “Following requests for comment, Vassar officials on Friday said that this ban was a “mistake” and that Israeli-brand hummus would continue to be sold on Vassar’s campus. “The decision about Sabra hummus was a mistake and our cafeteria is now stocking both the Sabra and Cedar’s brands,” said Jeff Kosmacher, Vassar’s director of media relations and public affairs. “There was no ban. Campus Dining made and communicated an initial decision in error and ultimately decided to take a different step,” said Kosmacher in response to a follow-up email asking him to elaborate on this decision. “We have nothing else to say on the matter.”)

The event included explanations of the BDS movement’s aims and political context, as well as an exploration of the current state of the movement in the United States, and comes just over one year after dozens of professors signed an open letter criticizing President Catharine Bond Hill and Dean of the Faculty Jonathan Chenette’s refusal to participate in the American Studies Association’s (ASA) resolution for an academic boycott of Israel until it complied with international law.”)
