    Classification Date-Description
    TARGETING JEWISH STUDENTS AND STAFF: DISCRIMINATION;
    DENYING JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION;
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    3/27/18 – An opinion piece published in the University of Virginia’s campus paper, The Cavalier Daily, supported discriminatory exclusion of the Jewish Leadership Council from the Minority Rights Coalition by denying Jews self-determination and demonizing and delegitimizing Israel, stating, “I believe that for the JLC to be considered eligible for membership in the MRC, they must denounce their ties to Zionist groups…It is neither ‘hypocritical’ nor ‘ironic’ for the MRC to reject the JLC based on their ties to Zionist groups. Instead, the hypocrisy falls upon the JLC for trying to join the MRC — a group that ‘recognizes basic human dignity of all persons’ — while voicing support for an apartheid state. One cannot both support human rights and the state of Israel at the same time…Any student group that is remotely committed to protecting minority rights should denounce the state of Israel…any nationalist land claims that are founded on the genocide of a native people should be immediately contested…By these grounds, the state of Israel…makes questionable the status of its own self-determination.”
    DISCRIMINATION 2/25/18 – The Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) was denied membership in the Minority Rights Coalition because, as was described in MRC at UVA’s “Statement on our relationship with The Hillel Jewish Leadership Council,” “JLC is an umbrella organization which includes the CIO, ‘Hoos for Israel’ (HFI).” This decision was exclusively applied to a Jewish organization, as alumni and former leaders in the Jewish Leadership Council and Hoos for Israel pointed out in an open letter concerning the issue that, “SPJP [Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine] is still listed in updated materials as a member of the Middle Eastern Leadership Council — one of the MRC’s full members. By definitions clear in the MRC’s letter, this makes SPJP a longtime constituent organization of the MRC.”
    SUPPRESSION OF SPEECH/MOVEMENT/ASSEMBLY;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    2/22/18 – A “Building Bridges” event that was sponsored by the Brody Jewish Center (Hillel) and Hoos for Israel was disrupted by protesters shouting anti-Israel slogans, including “Fight the power, turn the tide, end Israeli apartheid” through a megaphone, preventing the speakers from being heard. Representatives invited the protesters to engage in a dialogue, but the lead protester responded, “No dialogue with racists.” The continued disruption resulted in the event being unable to proceed as planned, and police were called. Protesters then moved outside, but continued to use their megaphone to disrupt the speakers.
    GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
    HISTORICAL
    8/11/17 – About 100 white nationalists marched on the campus carrying tiki torches and chanting Nazi slogans, including “Sieg heil” and “blood and soil” and giving the Nazi salute. There were reports of at least one t-shirt containing a slogan from Adolf Hitler. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the white nationalists “were marching through the heart of the campus, out of view of the [University] president’s residence, stomping the ground and chanting, ‘You will not replace us’ and ‘Jews will not replace us.'”
    GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
    HISTORICAL
    10/23/16 – An orange Star of David with the word “Juden” underneath it was spray painted on an off-campus student housing building. “Juden” is the German word for Jews, and the graffiti is direct Holocaust imagery
    ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY
    4/13/17 – SJP held the event, “Noura Erakat: Palestine in the Trump Administration.” During her talk, Erakat delegitimized Israel, claiming it is an “apartheid reality” and made supportive statements of BDS, including listing academic organizations who “have all endorsed the academic boycott of Israel.” This event was sponsored by the University of Virginia Americas Center and the department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures.
    DELEGITIMIZATION 3/21/16 – Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine held a series of events for “Israeli Apartheid Week.” The advertisement for this week falsely accused Israel of apartheid and settler colonialism.
    DELEGITIMIZATION 3/22/15 – UVA Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine put up a “wall” on campus that falsely accused Israel of being an apartheid state.
    BDS ACTIVITY: BDS EVENT 10/21/16 – SPJP held the event, “SPJP Discussion – BDS” and discussed if “BDS is antisemitic.”
    CALLS FOR BDS 3/24/16 – UVA SPJP held the event “SPJP Presents: Remi Kanazi.” The advertisement for the event linked to a video poem of Remi Kanazi that promotes divestment.

    Description note, (“The disrupters’ actions against fellow students and against University policy resulted in condemnations by The Cavalier Daily Editorial Board and Dean of Students Allen Groves. The theatrics even received national and international media attention including in the Washington Post and Times of Israel. One student attendee went on record in The Cavalier Daily stating that he felt threatened and that the disrupters were “very antagonistic and almost militant.” Protecting students from this type of intimidation is one of the core reasons why the MRC needs to exist. Excluding the JLC and HFI from the MRC sends a clear message that the MRC does not consider the protection of Jewish students from intimidation a part of their mission when such intimidation occurs in the context of anti-Israel activism. We hope that such a message is accidental, and will be swiftly corrected.”)
