Our campus” and “fists up, fight back!” One speaker then promoted BDS because “[The State of Israel is] committing ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people.” Another speaker, who introduced himself as a member of Students for a Democratic Society, demonized Israel as well, stating, “Zionist militias…ethnically cleansed the indigenous inhabitants.” Chants of “whose campus, our campus” immediately followed this speech along with, “racists off our campus, Zionists off our campus, Islamophobes off our campus, fights up, fight back!” A woman then called out someone in the audience, saying, “one of their members is here so let’s let them know,” and promptly started chanting, “racists off our campus…free free free Palestine!”
    HARASSMENT;
    HISTORICAL
    9/12/17 – A student found dozens of posters from the group “Vangaurd America” on campus. One of the posters had a black skull with a Jewish star in red on its forehead with text reading, “Beware the International Jew.” Background text read, “hedonism, rape, genocide, prostitution, white guilt, poverty and indoctrination.”
    HARASSMENT;
    DENIGRATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (BDS EVENT)
    3/27/17 – Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) hosted a discussion at the University of Houston (UH) called “The Black Radical Tradition and Palestine” with Dr. Gerald Horne, chair of African-American Studies at UH as part of “Israeli Apartheid Week.” During the event, Dr. Home called for BDS, stating, “Just as we enlist more black organizations into the BDS movement, boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement..it would…give a direct boost to BDS if we had the Palestinian forces and their allies internationally speak out more on police terrorism.” An article covering the event boasted how “Zionists were driven away.” The article detailed how a group of Zionist students spoke during the question and answer session and were trying to speak to students outside the auditorium. “When this was discovered, all the students left the lecture hall and shouted them down with ‘Free, free Palestine! Occupation is a crime.’ The Zionists tried to have a confrontation, but their words were drowned in a sea of loud chanting. This continued for over ten minutes, until the students finally drove them out of the building and off campus.” A student who attended the event said, “I couldn’t believe the Zionists in the discussion who were defending Israel. It reminded me of people who deny the existence of racism and then find all sorts of ways to justify it.”
    ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: DEMONIZATION 4/19/18 – An op-ed in the student paper that discussed a popular blogger/videographer used denigrating and demonizing language, stating, “Nuseir Yassin [Nas Daily]…identifies himself as an Israeli-Arab of Palestinian descent and expresses no interest in discussing the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land or the ethnic cleansing of over a million Palestinians since 1948…He makes no mention of the overwhelming number of Israelis who are vicious Zionists aiming to create a white-only Jewish state.”
    CONDONING TERRORISM;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    4/16/18 – An article column in the student paper condoned terrorism and delegitimized Israel, stating, “Inter-sectional feminism which aims to support women as a whole cannot support the Israeli government…The institutionalized destruction of Palestinian women’s lives has been a primary feature of the Israeli apartheid state…Palestinians have continued to suffer healthcare discrimination under the apartheid state…Palestine’s most famous icon of resistance is Leila Khaled. In 1969, Khaled and her comrade hijacked TWA flight 840 flying from Rome to Tel Aviv, forcing the pilot to fly over Haifa so she can see her hometown that millions are Palestinians are forbidden from going back to. Since then she has been apart of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and her attacks received international recognition and revitalized the question of Palestine internationally. She is not the first Palestinian woman to take an active role in the fight…heroic women in battle, such as Hulwa Zeidan, who witnessed the tragic death of both her husband and son while fighting for their homeland, and then moved on to sacrifice her life in resisting Zionist colonizers…Woman were ready for an intifada and their organizing acted as the backbone of the resistance…The stories of Palestinian women are ones of resilience, resistance, and perseverance that every women can continue to learn from as their fight for liberation continues.”
    DEMONIZATION 4/11/18 – An article in the school paper demonized Israel, accusing the state ot carrying out “incremental genocide.” The article then claimed, “Israel has managed to convince the world that what they’re doing is not genocide, and that is because they’re successful at this incremental tactic.”
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    4/9/18 – An article in the school paper demonized and delegitimized Israel. The article was headlined, “The Israeli definition of peace is a massacre in Gaza.” The author claimed that “Palestinians were ethnically cleansed by the Israeli military” and called Israel “a settler-colonial regime founded on ethnic cleansing.” The author then accused Israel of committing a “massacre” against Palestinians during border clashes on March 30, and ended by stating, “This is the Israeli definition of peace: peace for themselves and apartheid for Palestinians.”
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    4/2/18 – SJP held the event, “SJP Presents: Fady Joudah on Art & Resistance.” During the event, Joudah demonized and delegitimized Israel, claiming, “it’s the continuation of the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people” and “of the condition of apartheid practiced in Palestine against Palestinians.”
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    3/21/18 – An article in the student newspaper demonized and delegitimized Israel, stating, “For Palestinians, apartheid is, and has been since 1948, an everyday reality…Israel uses the facade of a democracy to overshadow the reality that anyone who is not a white Jew is treated as a second-class citizen with limited rights…security forces not only include the highly violent Israeli Defense Force (IDF) but also the Palestinian Authority (PA). Even the President of the PA, Mahmoud Abbas, acts as a political puppet for the Israeli state.”
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    3/8/18 – An op-ed in The Daily Cougar demonized and delegitimized Israel under the guise of criticizing a recent policy to deport African migrants who came through unofficial channels into Israel, by stating, “the deportations themselves are further reminders that Israel is an ethnocracy set on expelling African refugees and indigenous Palestinians…Some Israelis have made it a point to fight back, including setting up a shelter for refugees. However, their measures will only amount to a drop in the ocean if they don’t begin to deal with their history of ethnic-cleansing and see the liberation of Palestinians from apartheid is part-and-parcel of the same fight for refugee rights.”
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    2/13/18 – A column in the official student-run newspaper demonized and delegitimized Israel, claiming, “Millions of Palestinians, victims of ethnic cleansing and settler colonialism, currently live in exile…Given the Israeli state’s long history of ethnic-cleansing and imprisonment of Palestinians, we cannot expect Netanyahu to act as a good neighbor to Palestinians…As the UN has pointed out, Palestinians live under apartheid within Israel…we cannot expect Palestinians to receive fair treatment from an apartheid state.”
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    1/22/18 – An article in the student-run school newspaper demonized and delegitimized Israel, stating, “ethnic cleansing is a constant threat…Ahed’s show-trial and possible imprisonment reflects the larger system of apartheid within the Israeli legal system…For anyone living under settler-colonialism, a system that is inherently violent, the only logical reaction is to defend themselves by any means necessary. Ahed’s hands should not be tied for slapping an occupying soldier whose very presence is a threat to her existence. The violence of the colonized Palestinians will never be equal to the violence of the colonizing Israelis who have been imperializing and ethnically cleansing Palestine since 1948… For Palestinians living under a settler-colonial regime, just existing is an act of resistance, and slapping an occupying soldier is another step towards liberation.”

During the event, Pappé demonized and delegitimized Israel and Zionism, as well as denied Jews self-determination. Throughout the talk, he repeatedly falsely accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing” and claimed that “Jewish settlers coveted the homeland that was already populated by native indigenous people, and like so many other settler colonialist movements in history what they did was regard themselves as indigenous and to de-indigenize so to speak the native population.” He further stated, “Zionist ideology…if you don’t get rid of an ideology which is racist and wants to get rid of the people who live or used to live for centuries in the same land, as long as you respect this ideology as the only democracy in the Middle East you will never get peace and reconciliation in Palestine…From Israeli perspective every Palestinian is either a person in jail or potential prisoner. This is the perception of the indigenous native Palestinian by the settler state.” He also referred to the “apartheid wall” and ended the talk with support for BDS, stating, “Another young person in the world who is convinced that the boycott, divestment, and sanctions is a good idea against Israel is a change in reality even if it’s only one person.”

He stated, “It’s not just the occupation, stupid. It’s the right of return, a calling for all Palestinians….It’s the transformation from a racist, exclusionist, supremacist state to a nation for all of its citizens…Israel you’re a proxy for empire…yes, your’e singled out..Did I hurt your feelings? You are either with oppression or against it….your system of oppression is coming to an end.”
