TARGETING JEWISH STUDENTS AND STAFF: DISCRIMINATION 11/2/17 – Protesters disrupting a speech by David Horowitz, sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation, chanted, “Zionists off our campus….Zionists off our campus…Free, Free, Free Palestine.”
9/12/17 – A student found dozens of posters from the group “Vangaurd America” on campus. One of the posters had a black skull with a Jewish star in red on its forehead with text reading, “Beware the International Jew.” Background text read, “hedonism, rape, genocide, prostitution, white guilt, poverty and indoctrination.”
3/27/17 – Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) hosted a discussion at the University of Houston (UH) called “The Black Radical Tradition and Palestine” with Dr. Gerald Horne, chair of African-American Studies at UH as part of “Israeli Apartheid Week.” During the event, Dr. Home called for BDS, stating, “Just as we enlist more black organizations into the BDS movement, boycott, divestment, and sanctions would…give a direct boost to BDS if we had the Palestinian forces and their allies internationally speak out more on police terrorism.” An article covering the event boasted how “Zionists were driven away.” The article detailed how a group of Zionist students spoke during the question and answer session and were trying to speak to students outside the auditorium. “When this was discovered, all the students left the lecture hall and shouted them down with ‘Free, free Palestine! Occupation is a crime.’ The Zionists tried to have a confrontation, but their words were drowned in a sea of loud chanting. This continued for over ten minutes, until the students finally drove them out of the building and off campus.” A student who attended the event said, “I couldn’t believe the Zionists in the discussion who were defending Israel. It reminded me of people who deny the existence of racism and then find all sorts of ways to justify it.”
11/30/17 – SJP and the Palestine American Cultural Center hosted the event “Ilan Pappé on the Centennial of the Balfour Declaration” at the Graduate College of Social Work. During the event, Pappé demonized and delegitimized Israel and Zionism, as well as denied Jews self-determination. Throughout the talk, he repeatedly falsely accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing” and claimed that “Jewish settlers coveted the homeland that was already populated by native indigenous people, and like so many other settler colonialist movements in history what they did was regard themselves as indigenous and to de-indigenize so to speak the native population.” He further stated, “Zionist ideology…if you don’t get rid of an ideology which is racist and wants to get rid of the people who live or used to live for centuries in the same land, as long as you respect this ideology as the only democracy in the Middle East you will never get peace and reconciliation in Palestine…From Israeli perspective every Palestinian is either a person in jail or potential prisoner. This is the perception of the indigenous native Palestinian by the settler state.” He also referred to the “apartheid wall” and ended the talk with support for BDS, stating, “Another young person in the world who is convinced that the boycott, divestment, and sanctions is a good idea against Israel is a change in reality even if it’s only one person.”
10/24/17 – At the National Students for Justice in Palestine Conference 2017, one speaker, Remi Kenazi, denied Jews self-determination by calling for the “right of return,” which would effectively eliminate Israel, and demonized and delegitimized Israel. He stated, “It’s not just the occupation, stupid. It’s the right of return, a calling for all Palestinians….It’s the transformation from a racist, exclusionist, supremacist state to a nation for all of its citizens…Israel you’re a proxy for empire…yes, your’e singled out..Did I hurt your feelings? You are either with oppression or against it….your system of oppression is coming to an end.”
3/27/17 – SJP erected a mock “apartheid wall” as part of “Israeli Apartheid Week 2017.” One panel said, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” which is effectively a call to eliminate Israel, and another panel demonized Israel, saying, “If you want to find a safe place in Gaza, do not stand near a child,” implying that Israel intentionally targets Palestinian children for harm.
3/8/17 – SJP held the event, “BDS 101,” whose description stated, “Israel is occupying and colonizing Palestinian land, discriminating against Palestinian citizens of Israel and denying Palestinian refugees the right to return to their homes.” The “right of return” would effectively eliminate Israel as a Jewish state.
3/3/17 – SJP released a “Statement on Bigotry & Anti-Semitism” that denied Jews self-determination and delegitimized Israel while purporting to be against antisemitism, stating, “We are committed to building a world that values justice and equality, not oppression and apartheid…we oppose Zionism and Israel’s discriminatory policies, and we condemn anti-Semitism.”
2/29/16 – SJP hosted “Israeli Apartheid Week 2016” in order to, according to the advertisement for the event, “raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid policies towards the Palestinians and to build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign.”
3/31/15 – UH SJP and BDS Houston co-sponsored an event with Remi Kanazi entitled “Poetic Injustice: Writings on Resistance and Palestine.” During the event, Kenazi utilized historical antisemitic tropes of Jewish power saying Jewish students who stand up for Israel want “domination not dialogue.” He demonized Israel saying Israel is “carrying out ethnic cleansing.” He delegitimized by referring to “Israeli apartheid” and that there should be “no normalization with a settler/colonial state.” He also promoted BDS saying “F*&! Zionists, Boycott Israel!”
BDS ACTIVITY: BDS EVENT 10/27/17 – The 2017 National SJP Conference was held on campus. According to the advertisement of the conference, BDS workshops were held. Furthermore, according to Washington Free Beacon, the program guide detailed how a number of organizations would provide BDS support to students to start BDS campaigns. The coalition of groups called the “Campus Palestine Support Network” includes the American Muslims for Palestine, Palestine Legal, the American Friends Service Committee, Jewish Voice for Peace, the U.S. Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel, and the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights.
BDS EVENT 10/19/16 – SJP held the event “Palestine and #BlackLivesMatter,” at which BDS was discussed, according to the advertisement for the event.
