Student Voices

  • February 1, 2017 – University of California Riverside Student (Julia) “A few weeks ago, a resolution was proposed by the Riverside chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. The resolution called for the removal of Sabra hummus for supposed ties to the Israel Defense Forces and the condemnation of the landmark UC Principles Against Intolerance for the alleged silencing of student activism. I’m not here to convince you of one side over the other. I’m not Jewish, therefore it is not for me to define anti-Semitism, just as I wouldn’t want anyone who identifies as straight to tell me what is homophobia. However, this resolution is insulting to students like myself who are committed to supporting our students.” Read more

    Classification Date-Description
10/24/17 – SJP organized a “Silent Protest Against The Occupation Of Palestine” on campus. During the protest, one member held a demonizing and delegitimizing sign that said, “End Occupation, Genocide, Oppression, Colonialism, Apartheid.” Another member held a different demonizing sign saying, “Palestinian Genocide IS RAEL.”
5/15/17 – SJP erected a mock “apartheid wall” on campus and one of the panels stated, “apartheid is real” and another called for divestment.
DENYING JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION 5/5/17 – SJP took part in a “salt water challenge” on campus. At the conclusion of the challenge, SJP members chanted numerous times, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” which is effectively a call for the elimination of the Jewish state.
2/1/17 – The student senate discussed and voted on a bill to ban Sabra Hummus from campus. The bill passed 13-0 with one abstention. According to an attendee of the meeting, arguments made in favor of the resolution demonized and delegitimized Israel with false accusations including that “Israel was built on the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinian people, that Sabra funds the IDF, and that the sale of Sabra drives apartheid and murder.”
5/11/16 – As part of “Palestine Awareness Week,” SJP held a silent protest on campus with a demonizing sign saying, “Stop US funding of Genocide,” and delegitimizing signs saying “Stop Israeli Apartheid” and “UC is Complicit in Apartheid.”
10/22/15 – An academic conference entitled “Palestine, Israel and the Assault on Academic Freedom,” sponsored by the California Scholars for Academic Freedom, the UCR departments of Ethnic Studies and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, the UCR SJP and many other BDS-supporting organizations, was held at UC Riverside on Oct. 22 – 23. UCR Professor David Lloyd, who had organized the conference, gave the opening address, in which he praised the BDS movement. Many of the speakers spoke in support of BDS and utilized antisemitic expressions that demonized and delegitimized Israel. For example, UCR Professor Jeffrey Sachs falsely accused Zionism of being “racist” and based on “violence..congealed in the state’s form and its ongoing colonizing practice.” Nadia Elia claimed that Zionism is not only “a form of racism” but is a manifestation “of imperialist, expansionist, settler-colonialism” and “a form of institutionalized structuralized violence.” Elia also stated: “We are not in this only to free Palestine, we are in this to abolish Zionism, and the sooner the better.” UCLA Professor Saree Makdisi falsely accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing,” “apartheid” and “settler colonialism.”
DELEGITIMIZATION 3/30/15 – A one-credit student-taught course entitled “Palestine & Israel: Settler-Colonialism and Apartheid”was taught by the leader of UCR’s SJP. The course title and syllabus provided evidence that the course was designed to delegitimize Israel.
1/14/15 – Students for Justice in Palestine at UC Riverside was one of the signatories of a statement entitled “Say No to Faithwashing: Boycott Muslim Leadership Initiative,” which falsely accuses Israel of “ethnic cleansing” and “apartheid,” and pledges commitment to “the BDS call.”
BDS ACTIVITY: BDS VOTE 1/18/17 – The student senate discussed a bill to ban Sabra Hummus (SR W17-007), which was tabled as it had not yet passed through the legislative review committee. After being tabled, the resolution was discussed on the floor.
CALLS FOR BDS 4/22/15 – UCR SJP issued a press release claiming that a letter they had written to the heads of the university’s dining services demanding that they stop serving Sabra humus resulted in that brand of humus being removed from the dining service’s shelves. On April 29 UCR officials deemed the decision a “mistake” and reversed it, ensuring that Sabra humus will continue to be served in university dining facilities.
CALLS FOR BDS 3/6/15 – 4 professors from UC Riverside were among the co-authors of an op-ed supporting the anti-Israel divestment resolutions on UC campuses: David Lloyd, Dylan Rodriguiz, Jeffrey Sachs, and Devra Weber.
CALLS FOR BDS 2/8/15 – The Vice-President of External Affairs of UCR’s Associated Students issued a press release in support of the anti-Israel divestment resolution passed by UCSA that day.

I’m writing you because it has recently come to our attention that Scottys, as well as the other campus stores, has started selling Sabra hummus products at UCR. Many SJP members, as well as several other students, are deeply disturbed about this development. The reason why we are concerned is because the company which manufactures Sabra hummus, the Strauss Group, has been a voice of support for the ongoing Israeli occupation through its ties with Israel’s military. This is apparent in their vocal support and material sustenance of the Israeli military, namely the Golani and Givati Brigades. The Golani and Givati Brigades Israel’s elite forces, are known for its history of severe human rights violations. Many instances of these violations are well documented, from the authorization of the use of white phosphorus chemical weapons on civilians in Gaza to the torture and humiliation of Palestinian detainees in West Bank. Because of this, a boycott campaign against Sabra is happening at many universities in cities across the nation.”)

The university regrets this instance,” the university’s statement said. “In trying to be responsive to student taste preferences, a decision was made without proper consideration.”)

April 29, 2015: AMCHA – UNIVERSITY STATEMENT – Statement on Choice of Hummus Brand at UC Riverside Convenience Store Facilities

April 28, 2015: Highlander – Concerning the Rest of the Voices (Description note, “That said, while the course is valid in theory, in practice there are some glaring flaws. The most important of these is that the material is extremely biased. By presenting only the Palestinian view of the conflict, it is inevitable that Israel will be painted in too negative a light. Such a level of negativity risks leaving the realm of bringing in new viewpoints and instead using the class to make political statements, which would be unacceptable in this university, which has policies stating that a course cannot be used to forward any partisan effort. It is therefore necessary to counter said bias to make the class fully legitimate. Another aspect that must be considered is that, regardless of the intent behind the course, the material has managed to offend a subset of students on campus, and this necessitates an effort by the university to rectify the offense. If attention is not paid to such students’ concerns, that inaction could be construed as bias against that group — also an unacceptable possibility in as diverse a campus as UCR. Considering that there would be an equal outcry if the situation were reversed — if, say, some class called “Israeli Voices” created dissent among pro-Palestine students and groups — no one involved can afford to ignore how others will react to their views.”)

This came as a surprise to the students seeing as how just a few months prior, the student senate passed a divestment resolution stating that the students of UCR do not want their tuition dollars going towards funding the occupation of Palestine. Since Sabra’s parent company, the Strauss Group, is complicit in Israel’s military occupation of Palestine, students were very upset. The Strauss Group provides material and financial donations to two Israeli military units, the Golani and Givati brigades, which have been found by the United Nations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to have committed egregious violations of human rights and international law in Palestine.”)
