  • April 2015, Article Author  “Students are even experiencing anti-Semitism in the classroom. At Northeastern University, professor, Muhammad Shahid Alam, demonizes Israel, delegitimizes Jewish history and infringes on his student’s free speech by shutting down any differing views. A non-Jewish student that dropped his class stated that “if someone does raise a counterpoint, he uses semantics to twist it around and try to tear whoever asked the question apart.” Classrooms are a place where students should feel comfortable sharing their unique opinions. Some of the most meaningful learning experiences occur when students question course content and explore various perspectives. Therefore, violating a student’s right to free speech is also infringing on their right to learn.”  Read more

I now unfortunately can understand what bigotry really is, and it is absolutely not something that I ever wanted or needed to experience. No one should have to experience hatred like this in their learning environment.”  Read more

Hunt News NU – LETTER: STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORT DIVESTNU
(Description note, “Students for Justice in Palestine  – Climate change and environmental destruction are issues that, almost by definition, affect everyone on the globe, yet they affect some more drastically than others. We know that as the seas rise and intense storms become all the more frequent, it will be the poor and oppressed who suffer disproportionately. This is no different in Palestine than anywhere else; it does not take much to realize that, should famine and drought continue to occur from climate change, Palestinians will thirst and starve before the Israelis (indeed, they already are already thirsting and starving disproportionately more than the Israelis). At the same time, Israeli policies against Palestine harm the environment. Israel has a long history of using environmental destruction against Palestinians; the destruction of homes coincides with the destruction of olive groves, according to the Washington Post. Israeli dumping of waste, including toxic and nuclear waste, has contaminated Palestinian water supplies, according to Mondoweiss. The UN reports that Gaza could be uninhabitable by 2020 due to economic “de-development.” In a very real sense, the oppression of Palestine is not limited to the people but includes the land itself.”)

The Huntington News – Black Palestine coalition gathers for dialogue on social issues
(Description note, “Kanazi performed a poem he wrote titled “This Divestment Bill Hurts My Feelings.” He said the piece is a response to pro-Israel campus groups that oppose movements urging universities to stop funding companies that support the systematic oppression of Palestinians and other minorities. Kanazi said he believes the liberation movements of blacks in America and Palestinians in Israel are rooted in similar problems and that both issues must be resolved to achieve true victory over oppression. “If Palestinian liberation is achieved tomorrow while mass incarceration [of blacks] thrives and the policies of stop and frisk advance, then the picture is not complete,” he said.”)

The event is being held by the University Scholars and Civic Engagement Programs. Klein was invited to speak about her newest book, “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate.” Klein is best known for her extreme anti-capitalist views but is also well-known for her extreme anti-Israel and often anti-Semitic views. In an article written by Klein, she levied the disgusting accusation that Israeli men enjoy “Holocaust pornography” and profit off the sale of clothing and other products with sexualized images of Holocaust victims.”)

April 8, 2015: The Algemeiner – Group Says String of Swastika Attacks on Boston Area Campuses Are Unrelated (Description note, “The spate began on March 29th when swastikas were found spray painted on several cars at a fraternity house at Tufts University campus on Packard Avenue. It was the fourth antisemitic incident at the university in less than two years. A day later, a swastika was found drawn on a dry-erase board in the common space of the International Village dorm of Northeastern University. President Joseph Aoun called the incident a hateful act of antisemitism…. Then, on Sunday April 2nd, barely 20 miles away, on the campus of Framingham State University, a student reported finding a swastika carved into his vehicle. The incident was at least the second time this school year that a swastika has been found on the campus, the local WCVB TV reported. ‘It is an indication of what Jewish students are facing on campuses across the country,’ [ADL’s] Terestan said. ‘The concern is that anti-Israel sentiment is leading to this type of antisemitic activity.’”)

A mezuzah, a religious door hanging, was vandalized at an off-campus apartment building popular with Northeastern students, she wrote. “I don’t think it’s coincidental that the swastika appeared in the same residence hall where [Students for Justice in Palestine] conducted ‘dorm storming’ with mock eviction notices last spring, and went door-to-door soliciting signatures for their divestment petition, in violation of quiet hours, during midterms just a few weeks ago,” she wrote. “To me, it isn’t important if the same individuals were involved: hate begets hate and it appears we’re experiencing the after effects now.”)

January 29, 2015: Truth Revolt – Northeastern Univ. Professor Abuses Platform To Preach Anti-Semitism

January 29, 2015: The Huntington News – Column: NU promoting immoral NGO (description note: “Code Pink is a radical anti-Israel group that supports many anti-Semitic movements. It claims to fight for social justice and tries to hold Israel accountable for supposed violations of international law, yet it ignores the women and LGBTQ communities that are actually oppressed throughout much of the Middle East. It holds Israel to a double standard and focuses its efforts of delegitimization and demonization of it only because it is the Jewish state… Signs at protests held by Code Pink include sayings such as “Facist Zionists commit genocide against Semitic peoples of Palestine” and “Say no to Israel’s war crimes.” Chants at the protests have included vile slogans such as: “We support the intifada,” “Go Back to Germany” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”… Calls for the complete destruction of the Jewish state, the Jewish people and increased violence against the Jews are reminiscent of the Holocaust.”)

To the Members of the Northeastern Community:

An incident has occurred on our campus that is completely unacceptable and an affront to our entire community and the values of our university. This afternoon, swastikas were drawn on two flyers posted in Dockser Hall publicizing an event, sponsored by the Alliance for Israel at Northeastern and the Louis D. Brandeis Center, scheduled to take place Monday at the School of Law.

Let there be no doubt: we have absolutely no tolerance for anti-Semitism, prejudice, and hate crimes of any kind, including this incident. The Northeastern University Police Department is in possession of evidence related to this act and is actively investigating the case.

Let me also affirm my support for all groups, including the organizers of Monday’s event, to operate and speak freely in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding, and free from intimidation. Northeastern is a community that embraces diversity in all its forms, and we will always cherish and uphold this value with vigor and determination. We will not accept anything less.

Sincerely,

Joseph E. Aoun
