  • February 22, 2018 – Northeastern University Jewish Student (Carly) – “Something that was spoken about with regard to number 19, the HP referendum, was the diversity and inclusion policy. Jewish students and pro-Israel students spoke about how BDS as a movement is an anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist movement with the intentions of the destruction of the state of Israel and potentially the destruction of the Jewish people.” Read More

Classification Date-Description
11/2/17 – SJP organized a protest of a Hillel event with Israeli soldiers. The advertisement for the protest was titled “No War Criminals at NEU: Protest ‘Israeli Soldiers Tour’.” The advertisement further stated, “Israeli soldiers are coming to Northeastern on Nov. 2 as part of a speaking tour meant to distract from and whitewash Israel’s brutal treatment of Palestinians…Inviting the forces of an occupying army onto our campus community is unacceptable.” According to Hunt News, “Protesters picketed in front of Hillel, banging plastic buckets, chanting and holding signs reading ‘IDF=War Criminals,’ ‘Justice for Palestine’ and ‘No more Israeli Apartheid.’…Inside the Jewish center, Keren and Tom spoke about how they came to serve in the IDF…the yelling from the protesters echoed into the room.” A large banner read, “No Israeli Soldiers at NEU.” An event organizer told AMCHA that the planned protest reduced attendance at the event.
4/7/16 – At a Northeastern SJP event which is part of the Black/Palestine Solidarity Tour, Remi Kanazi performed a poem he wrote titled “This Divestment Bill Hurts My Feelings,” where he claimed the piece is a response to pro-Israel campus groups that oppose BDS, effectively saying that Jewish student concerns surrounding BDS are unfounded and based only on sensitivity. Kenazi also accused Israel of ethnic cleansing.
3/25/16 – An antisemitic flier was distributed to networked printers and fax machines at locations on campus. The flier had swastikas and said, “White Man are you Sick and Tired of the Jews Destroying Your Country through Mass Immigration and Degeneracy? Join Us in the Struggle for Global White Supremacy at the Daily Stormer.”
10/19/15 – A swastika was drawn on one of the stalls inside a men’s bathroom in Speare Hall, a university residence hall.

ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: DEMONIZATION 3/28/18 – SJP held the event, “How Israel “Pinkwashes” Apartheid with Sa’ed Atshan.” Pinkwashing is a demonizing term implying that Israel is malevolently representing itself as a safe haven for LGBQT people in order to hide Israel’s “crimes.”
2/2/18 – SJP launched a divestment campaign titled “Northeastern Against Hewlett-Packard” at a kick-off event. The description for the event stated, “Following the momentum of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, & Sanctions movement and Massachusetts Against Hewlett-Packard, we are calling on Northeastern to Boycott HP.” According to the Huntington News, the event began with a video produced by JVP, which stated, “People have lots of ideas about what a Jewish state should look like. Some called for equality for all citizens. But what was created, in practice, was institutional discrimination.” SJP also announced it plans to submit a referendum to SGA for Northeastern to end its contract with HP.
2/1/18 – Northeastern University School of Law SJP held the event, “The Rebirth of Students For Justice In Palestine At NUSL.” The event description noted the chapters’ SJP goals, which included demonizing and delegitimizing language of Israel and support for BDS, such as: “1) Situate the liberation of Palestine as part of a larger struggle against European settler colonialism in solidarity with Tasmanian Aboriginals, Native Americans, and other indigenous people whose lands are occupied, 2) host educational initiatives highlighting why Israel is as much as European settler colony as French-Algeria, Rhodesia, and Apartheid South Africa, 3) Intellectually challenge the predominant Pro-Israel propaganda at Northeastern’s campus that sanitizes Israel’s colonial violence towards Palestinians, 4) Support the liberation of Palestine through lobbying for Boycott and divestment from Israel and supporting the right of Palestinians to return to their ancestral homeland…THE RACIST COLONIAL ORIGINS OF ISRAEL!…In this kick off event, we will explore the racist colonial origins of the Israeli state through a mock trial of Arthur Balfour…we will explore how early Zionists explicitly described their mission in Palestine as a colonial venture that would serve the interests of British white supremacy.”
10/31/17 – SJP Northeastern organized a letter protesting the “Israeli Soldiers Tour” for organizational and individual signatories to make a statement that they “believe it is dangerous and misleading to normalize and put a friendly face on a brutally oppressive occupying military force.” The statement further demonized and delegitimized Israel, stating, “Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is rooted in settler-colonialism and white supremacy.” The letter was co-signed by Northeastern SJP, Northeastern Progressive Student Alliance, Northeastern University Students Against Institutional Discrimination, University of Massachusetts SJP, Tufts SJP, Wellesley SJP, Brandeis SJP, Suffolk SJP, Jewish Voice for Peace – Boston and Palestine@MIT.
DEMONIZATION 10/19/17 – SJP held the event, “SJP General Meeting: Israel and the Pseudoscience Of Eugenics.” The description for the event stated, “Join Northeastern University Students for Justice in Palestine this week as we delve into a discussion about the Zionist movement, and the historically instrumental role eugenics played within it. We will address both historical Zionist participation in eugenic practices, as well as current policies held by the Israeli state that further this history.”
10/12/17 – SJP held the event, “Does Israel Believe Black Lives Matter?” A description for the event stated, “From the Israeli regime helping apartheid South Africa secure nuclear weapons to Israel’s active role in strengthening apartheid South Africa’s military, a convincing case will be made for why boycott and divestment from the settler-colony of Israel is long overdue.”
9/21/17 – SJP held the event, “SJP’s 2nd General Meeting!” The description for the event stated, “Come out to our 2nd General Meeting of the semester, where we’ll be introducing BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) and how it relates to two companies: Sabra and Tribe. Non-apartheid related hummus will be available!”
DELEGITIMIZATION 3/20/17 – As part of “Israeli Apartheid Week,” SJP held the event, “Palestine 101: A History of Colonialism and Apartheid” with Professor Eve Spangler.
3/2/17 – SJP held the event, “Northeastern SJP Presents: Hummus and BDS!” The description for the event stated that SJP “will be hosting an educational and food event about our campaign to remove Tribe and Sabra hummus from local grocery stores. Both of these companies profit off of the continued humanitarian crimes committed against the Palestinian people, particularly in the bulldozing of Palestinian homes and land to make way for farm space to grow chickpeas….With this in mind, SJP has decided to try and push grocery stores around campus, like Symphony Market, to take Tribe and Sabra off their shelves.”
12/6/16 – SJP erected a mock “apartheid wall” on campus, which contained two antisemitic expressions, one which denied Jews self-determination by supporting Palestinians’ right of return, which would effectively eliminate the Jewish state, and the other calling for BDS.
DEMONIZATION 9/30/16 – SJP held the event, “Sa’ed Atshan: Pinkwashing.” The advertisement for the event claimed that Professor Atshan will be discussing pinkwashing, i.e malevolently representing Israel as a safe haven for LGBQT people in order to hide Israel’s “crimes.”

DEMONIZATION 3/29/16 – SJP hosted an event as part of “Israeli Apartheid Week” entitled “Wiping Away the Blood of Palestinians with The Rainbow Flag: Issues of Homonationalism and Pinkwashing,” in which Israel was falsely accused of “pinkwashing,” i.e. malevolently representing Israel as a safe haven for LGBQT people in order to hide Israel’s “crimes”.
DEMONIZATION 3/25/16 – SJP hosted an event as part of “Israeli Apartheid Week” entitled “Greenwashing: Israel’s Environmental Colonialism and Eco-Apartheid,” in which Israel was falsely accused of “greenwashing,” i.e. promoting its “green” environment practices to hide the injustices it perpetrates against the Palestinians.
7/14/15 – NU SJP was one of 9 Boston area student groups that published a Youtube video falsely accused Israel of “crimes against humanity” being an “apartheid state” and urges viewers, especially students, to take action by organizing in their respective communities and joining the BDS movement.
BDS ACTIVITY: BDS VOTE 2/12/18 – The Student Government Association (SGA) discussed and voted on a proposal to add to a school-wide referendum a BDS measure that urged NU to boycott Hewlett-Packard companies over the “central role” their technologies play “in the Israeli occupation of Palestine.” The proposal failed, with a vote of 47 against, seven in favor, and 12 abstaining.
BDS EVENT 4/4/17 – SJP held the event, “Using BDS to Combat South African Apartheid” to “learn a lot about how to best apply the practices of BDS” towards “pressur[ing] the Israeli government to end its human rights abuses against the Palestinian people.”
BDS EVENT 2/2/17 – SJP held a BDS event with Mass Against HP, entitled “Teach In- Why are we Boycotting HP?”

(Description note, “Students for Justice in Palestine  – Climate change and environmental destruction are issues that, almost by definition, affect everyone on the globe, yet they affect some more drastically than others. We know that as the seas rise and intense storms become all the more frequent, it will be the poor and oppressed who suffer disproportionately. This is no different in Palestine than anywhere else; it does not take much to realize that, should famine and drought continue to occur from climate change, Palestinians will thirst and starve before the Israelis (indeed, they already are already thirsting and starving disproportionately more than the Israelis). At the same time, Israeli policies against Palestine harm the environment. Israel has a long history of using environmental destruction against Palestinians; the destruction of homes coincides with the destruction of olive groves, according to the Washington Post. Israeli dumping of waste, including toxic and nuclear waste, has contaminated Palestinian water supplies, according to Mondoweiss. The UN reports that Gaza could be uninhabitable by 2020 due to economic “de-development.” In a very real sense, the oppression of Palestine is not limited to the people but includes the land itself.”)

(Description note, “Kanazi performed a poem he wrote titled “This Divestment Bill Hurts My Feelings.” He said the piece is a response to pro-Israel campus groups that oppose movements urging universities to stop funding companies that support the systematic oppression of Palestinians and other minorities. Kanazi said he believes the liberation movements of blacks in America and Palestinians in Israel are rooted in similar problems and that both issues must be resolved to achieve true victory over oppression. “If Palestinian liberation is achieved tomorrow while mass incarceration [of blacks] thrives and the policies of stop and frisk advance, then the picture is not complete,” he said.”)

April 8, 2015: The Algemeiner – Group Says String of Swastika Attacks on Boston Area Campuses Are Unrelated (Description note, “The spate began on March 29th when swastikas were found spray painted on several cars at a fraternity house at Tufts University campus on Packard Avenue. It was the fourth antisemitic incident at the university in less than two years. A day later, a swastika was found drawn on a dry-erase board in the common space of the International Village dorm of Northeastern University. President Joseph Aoun called the incident a hateful act of antisemitism…. Then, on Sunday April 2nd, barely 20 miles away, on the campus of Framingham State University, a student reported finding a swastika carved into his vehicle. The incident was at least the second time this school year that a swastika has been found on the campus, the local WCVB TV reported. ‘It is an indication of what Jewish students are facing on campuses across the country,’ [ADL’s] Terestan said. ‘The concern is that anti-Israel sentiment is leading to this type of antisemitic activity.’”)

It holds Israel to a double standard and focuses its efforts of delegitimization and demonization of it only because it is the Jewish state… Signs at protests held by Code Pink include sayings such as “Facist Zionists commit genocide against Semitic peoples of Palestine” and “Say no to Israel’s war crimes.” Chants at the protests have included vile slogans such as: “We support the intifada,” “Go Back to Germany” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”… Calls for the complete destruction of the Jewish state, the Jewish people and increased violence against the Jews are reminiscent of the Holocaust.”)

To the Members of the Northeastern Community:
An incident has occurred on our campus that is completely unacceptable and an affront to our entire community and the values of our university. This afternoon, swastikas were drawn on two flyers posted in Dockser Hall publicizing an event, sponsored by the Alliance for Israel at Northeastern and the Louis D. Brandeis Center, scheduled to take place Monday at the School of Law.
Let there be no doubt: we have absolutely no tolerance for anti-Semitism, prejudice, and hate crimes of any kind, including this incident. The Northeastern University Police Department is in possession of evidence related to this act and is actively investigating the case.
Let me also affirm my support for all groups, including the organizers of Monday’s event, to operate and speak freely in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding, and free from intimidation. Northeastern is a community that embraces diversity in all its forms, and we will always cherish and uphold this value with vigor and determination. We will not accept anything less.
