ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: DEMONIZATION 4/3/18 – SJP held the event, “Pinkwashing: No Pride in Apartheid.” Attendees were able to receive LBC credit for attending as the event was a collaboration between EMU’s SJP & QUEST. The event’s purpose was for “Tariq Luthun [to present] on Pinkwashing and other forms of Israeli propaganda.” Pinkwashing is a demonizing term implying that Israel is malevolently representing itself as a safe haven for LGBQT people in order to hide Israel’s “crimes.”
3/15/18 – SJP and the Latinx Student Association – LSA Eastern Michigan University held the event, “IAW: A World Without Walls Panel,” which was “LBC3 credit approved.” During the event, the individual introducing the event claimed Zionism is a “European colonial project” and that Palestinians are living under “apartheid.” One panelist called for the “right of return” which would effectively eliminate Israel as a Jewish state. Another panelist falsely claimed, “a lot of [Palestinian] children get abducted by settlers and their bodies burned and they’re mutilated.” The same panelist later claimed, “A lot of Zionists are brainwashed. Like, literally brainwashed…[with] pre-taught hate” to which the introducer claimed, “there’s an actual propoganda manual.”
DELEGITIMIZATION 11/6/17 – SJP held the event, “Palestine: Why the Caged Dove Sings Movie Screening.” The description for the event demonized and delegitimized Israel, stating, “Sabry Wazwaz is a Palestinian film maker and activist who created the film ‘Palestine: Why the Caged Dove Sings?’ to educate the public on the brutal military occupation of Palestine. Back in 2014, Wazwaz went to Palestine to interview those affected by Israel’s militant government and to document the reality of Israel’s apartheid and racist government.” The event was LBC Approved (Learning Beyond the Classroom) for L3A credit. A second promotion for the event stated, “Need LBC credit? Hate ethnic cleansing?”
DELEGITIMIZATION 10/26/17 – SJP tabled on campus. A sign near the table delegitimized Israel with the words: “End apartheid.”
DELEGITIMIZATION 10/24/17 – A letter to the editor published in the student newspaper written by SJP delegitimized Israel, stating, “The language used in pro-Palestinian discourse is anti-colonial and anti-imperialist in nature – the ‘Israeli-Palestine’ conflict, is not a conflict, but rather apartheid. We call it how it is – it’s a black and white issue that does not have room for normalization…[The] U.N definition of apartheid includes murder, displacement, torture, and persecution on ethnic or racial grounds, all of which Palestinians experience in the West Bank, Gaza, and Israeli Occupied Palestine…While colonialist narratives claim that this is a security measure, which implies that all Palestinians are inherently violent and a security threat to Israel (an ahistorical and orientalist claim) the Apartheid Wall serves no purpose other than to stratify Palestinian people and land – it does not act as a security measure. Israel, a settler-colonial entity, has established its existence through the subjugation of the indigenous Palestinian population and the Wall serves as a reminder of that.”
DELEGITIMIZATION 10/19/17 – SJP participated in a diversity event co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity and Community Involvement titled, “We are not a costume.” SJP brought a sign to the event that stated, “End Apartheid.” Their explanation for participation in the event stated, “Our culture is NOT a costume. Our keffiyehs represent resistance and freedom fighters NOT terrorism. We will not tolerate the mockery or erasure of our cultures.”
DELEGITIMIZATION 9/19/17 – SJP members chanted the delegitimizing chant of “hey hey, ho ho, the apartheid has got to go” in front of a mural they painted on campus containing “the names of children who died by the hands of the Israel Defense Forces.” An additional mural had “End Apartheid” on it. Earlier in the day, SJP members tabled, and a sign near the table said “End Apartheid.”
