  • February 21, 2017 – Arizona State University Jewish Student (Aleeza) “I had a professor last semester who said anti-Semitism doesn’t happen anymore. It happens every day. Despite [myself] and other Jewish students speaking with the professor after class about the incident, the professor did not issue any sort of apology. This left Jewish students in the class feeling ostracized and trivialized…pop culture references and jokes about the Holocaust are at least partially responsible for the upward trend of anti-Semitism among college students. Cards Against Humanity and big comedians make people think it’s okay to make these jokes, because when we see big people doing things it becomes a cultural norm.” Read more
  • February 21, 2017 – Arizona State University Jewish Student (Jessica) “It makes me feel attacked and belittled, like my culture is a joke…[I’ve] felt ‘scared and confused’ about comments from fellow classmates. In one of [my] classes, Sherman said she was shocked when a girl she considered a friend and knew she was Jewish, tried to justify the Holocaust to her…The experience left [me] feeling deeply uneasy. I [had] never heard it from someone I didn’t consider an extremist. It made me feel like I might have to stop wearing my Hebrew ring.”
  • February 21, 2017 – Arizona State University Jewish Student (Hal) “What are they not seeing. My grandparents were affected by this mass genocide. My great uncle was killed. It’s just an awful, awful thing…the key to a safe environment for Jews on campus [is] to create a culture of acceptance. Outreach is a solution. On Rosh Hashanah, the day of the Jewish New Year, there was a Shofar blowing near the MU. It shows a small window into Judaism. A lot of people don’t know what Judaism is, and it would be good to have more understanding.” Read more
  • Nov 2014, Arizona State University Jewish Student (Randall) “It frightened me how blatantly anti-Semitic their display was, and yet how convincing it could be for the untrained eye, or to a student who does not know enough about the situation.” Read more
  • Nov 2014, Arizona State University Jewish Student (Randall) “It is terrifying because such activism targets a specific group on campus, the Jewish students at ASU.” Read more
  • Nov 2014, Arizona State University Jewish Student (Randall) “It frightens me how persistent SJP and its supporters are with these displays and with their advocacy of BDS (the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel) and how people remain quiet and subdued.” Read more
  • Nov 2014, Arizona State University Jewish Student (Randall) “Just the other day as I was walking to my Hebrew class, I saw on one of our lawns a display erected by Students For Justice in Palestine (SJP) that blatantly demonized Israel, accusing it of being an apartheid state and comparing Israeli policies to those of the Nazi party in the 1940s. Outraged, frustrated, and confused, I approached the SJP students and engaged them in a calm dialogue. I simply asked them what their stance was on Israel. These students responded forcefully by denouncing Israel’s right to exist and accusing Israel of murdering thousands of innocent Palestinians. I stood there baffled by their response, but I continued to speak to them peacefully. I simply wanted to understand their stance on Palestinian injustices. However, as the conversation deepened, they insisted on demonizing Israel and refusing to recognize Israel as a state.” Read more

    TARGETING JEWISH STUDENTS AND STAFF: GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
    HISTORICAL
    2/14/17 – The campus library was defaced with swastikas. (Date of this incident is approximated from the article.)
    DESTRUCTION OF JEWISH PROPERTY;
    HARASSMENT
    1/27/17 – A Jewish student returned to her apartment near campus one evening to find her mezuzah “maliciously torn” from her door. (Date of this incident is approximated from the article.)
    ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION:DELEGITIMIZATION2/20/15 – SJP ASU hosted a screening of “Roadmap to Apartheid,” a film which delegitimizes Israel by falsely accusing it of being an apartheid state.
    DELEGITIMIZATION2/16/15 – SJP ASU hosted a talk by Jeff Halper in which he called Israel “an apartheid regime that is able to sell itself as a democracy.”
    CONDONING TERRORISM;
    DEMONIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (BDS EVENT)
    2/5/15 – SJP ASU hosted a talk by independent journalist Dan Cohen, who demonized Israelis by falsely claiming that during the recent Gaza war Israel wanted to push out and crush completely the people of Gaza, and that Israel used Gaze as a “laboratory” for its weapons technology, and by showing selective video clips of Israeli teens dancing in the streets and laughing during the war, with the false implication being that they were celebrating Palestinian deaths. Cohen condoned terrorism by falsely asserting that the claim that Hamas used civilians as human shields was “ridiculous,” despite the established proof of this, and saying that he supports violent resistance on the part of Palestinians. Cohen also endorsed BDS has a justified measure.

    February 23, 2017:
    State Press – Jewish Sun Devils express anger of anti-Semitic rhetoric in Tempe
    (Description note, “Across America, anti-Semitic incidents have affected the Jewish population, and Tempe is no exception. Last week, swastikas were used to deface the library, said Josh Traulsen, the director of student life at Hillel, a Jewish organization on campus. Students said they have also felt the hate personally. Aleeza Kaplan, a nonprofit management junior, said she returned to her apartment near campus one evening to find her Mezuzah, a prayer scroll hanging on her doorway, ‘maliciously torn’ from her door. She said this was a blatant act of disrespect toward Judaism, as Mezuzahs hold great cultural significance. Kaplan said she was not surprised by the rise of anti-Semitism, as her people have experienced similar treatment ‘every day.’ ‘We’ve always known it was there,’ Kaplan said. ‘We are affected by it every day. This is only new to everyone else.’”)

    February 11, 2015:
    Jewish News – Self-defense, not hate
    (Description: Description note – a reaction to a journalist’s talk at ASU, “Checking into the writings of Dan Cohen, the Jewish journalist who spoke to Students for Justice in Palestine at Arizona State University last week (see Page 9), it became very clear that his assessment of the conflict between Israel and Palestinian Arabs is that it is based on racism…That is the narrative that a Dan Cohen imposes on the much more complicated Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and one that we hear echoed in calls from Arab quarters for the Jews to leave and go home to Europe. It is not accurate, but it is what we face…What’s more disturbing is that by tweeting random racist comments by cabbies, a person like Cohen is “reporting” a one-dimensional picture, one that can’t be verified or corrected, one that gives power to the flawed narrative. One that doesn’t believe in Israeli President Reuven Rivlin’s vision of peace: “Jews and Arabs are not doomed to live together, we are destined to live together.” It’s no wonder campuses are bedeviled by anti-Zionism.”)

Starting in 2006, out of the millions of sub-Saharan Africans that have fled ethnic cleansing, political persecution and environmental collapse on the continent, 60,000 have sought refuge in Israel. The Israeli government let most of them in, hesitant to be seen as outright forcing refugees back to the horrors they fled from. But to ensure that they would leave as soon as possible, the government conducted a campaign to incite racial hatred against them, passed laws to criminalize them and is now rounding them up off the city streets and incarcerating them in what can be accurately described as a desert concentration camp. The government openly admits that its objective is to “make their lives miserable” so that they will relent and agree to self-deport.)
