June 8, 2018 – TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY –
An article in the school paper called for BDS and delegitimized and demonized Israel. The article accused Israel of “apartheid,” referencing a discredited UN report, and claimed that Israel “unleashed fury upon Palestinian people…killing…and injuring…during mass protests” and engaged in “brutal human rights violations” as well as “continued massacres.” The article stated, “it is in their best interests that Jewish Bobcats join the efforts against the American-funded Israeli violence directed at Palestinians.”

A student video recorded a professor of sociology espousing a series of antisemitic beliefs and conspiracy theories about Jews during classes which included ideas that Ashkenazi Jews are not genetically related to the ancient Israelites, that 175,000 German Jews found safe harbor in the German army during the Holocaust, and that, according to the Times of Israel’s coverage, Judaism has degenerated from a universal religion, with roots in ancient Egypt, to a racist religion. Date of incident is article publishing date in Times of Israel.

An SJP member posted a new pledge titled, “Black Bruins: Pledge No Free Propaganda Trips to Apartheid Israel” to the UCLA Academic Advancement Program’s Facebook Page. The pledge demonizes and delegitimizes Israel, stating, “We, as Black Bruins who believe in the movement for justice and equality for the Palestinian people, pledge not to take free propaganda trips to apartheid Israel through Hillel’s Fact Finders Journey program, the ADL’s (Anti-Defamation League) Campus Leader Mission initiative, nor through any other Israel lobby groups. We also pledge to support the call for the University of California to divestment from companies that aid in, and profit from, apartheid and racialized State violence committed against the Palestinian people at the hands of the racist apartheid state of Israel.” The pledge then smears Hillel and ADL, stating, “Despite the Maccabee Task Force’s ties to White Supremacists, Hillel at UCLA willingly took sponsorship money from the Task Force to fund free propaganda trips to Israel in an attempt to coerce politically active students on campus against the Palestinian movement for equal rights…The Anti-Defamation League also sponsors free propaganda trips to Israel for student leaders through its Campus Leader Mission program. On top of its propaganda trips, the ADL has for years recruited police departments across the country to train in Israel. The tactics learned in Israel are militaristic, rooted in anti-Palestinian racism, and are used against Black communities in the US that already face a violent militaristic and racist police state…Black Bruins recognize how Black and Palestinian liberation is tied up in US empire. On top of racist policing collaborations, the US sends over $3 billion to Israel annually to fund its Jim Crow-like apparatus; meanwhile, it claims to have no money for Black people in Flint Michigan where the water continues to be contaminated. And just as the US supported the White supremacist government of apartheid South Africa by vetoing every UN Security Council Resolution, the US continues to support Israel in the international arena to push its imperialist policies that disproportionately impact the Black diaspora.”

While a professor was delayed in getting to class, antisemitic remarks were made to other students by a graduate student that included mocking Orthodox Jews. Fellow classmates laughed in agreement at the commentary, which included mimicking the voices and accents of Orthodox Jews multiple times with accented “Shalom” and “Shalom Bracha,” as well as mocking the choice to observe the Sabbath, including the decision to not drive. The student claimed Orthodox Jews “can not even rip toilet paper on sabbath” and denigrated Jews, saying “they [Jews] are everywhere in LA” and that they are “weird people.” Source: AMCHA submission.

An article in the school paper about a JVP-organized march “mourning for slain Palestinians” quoted a student, who claimed, “I’m here because the massacre of innocent people is completely unconscionable, and it’s even more unconscionable when it’s literally people trying to escape basically the world’s largest concentration camp. Literally 97 percent of the water is poisoned.” The article’s author claimed the student, “stat[ed] a statistic which has been confirmed by reports from a hydrologist who advises [the] Palestinian Water Authority” which then links to a Haaretz article acknowledging the water is contaminated by sewer and salt, but not “poisoned,” which would indicate a deliberate action by Israelis.

60 protesters shut down a student government meeting in protest of a divestment resolution hold-up based on a procedural course of action for the resolution by storming the room and shouting “Shut it down!” The students stomped onto the stage and grabbed microphones away from the sitting senators. A student introduced the protest, saying, “If you are upset with what is happening, you now share our frustration with last week.” This comment was followed by another student with a bandanna covering her face, who confronted the Senators saying, “I am a Palestinian…The resolution introduced last week did not ask anyone to take a position. I am in front of you, and I will not stop this fight just because all of you and your bureaucratics don’t know how to sit down at a f**king table and look at a resolution for what it is.” Ironically, the senators did intend to continue to discuss the resolution at the meeting after swearing in senators, but due to the protest shutting down the meeting, the divestment vote was cancelled.

Thirteen groups, including student groups at the University of Houston and nearby schools, released a “Statement Against the Presence of Nikki Haley at The University of Houston,” which demonized and delegitimized Israel, claiming, “As we mark the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, or catastrophe, which dispossessed 750,000 Palestinians with the creation of Israel and set off decades of ongoing displacement, ethnic cleansing, and settler colonialism, Israel continues to perpetrate acts of genocide in Gaza.” The statement went on to say, “Nikki Haley embodies the racism inherent in the US’s anti-Palestinian position. Her decisions, actions, and dehumanization of Palestinian lives show her complicity in the genocide of a native people fighting for liberation…We, the undersigned student organizations and faculty, declare unequivocally that hatred in all its forms is not welcome at our University and that no matter when injustice rears its ugly head, those of us on the correct side of history will confront it. We call on the University to signal to its students and the broader community that it is committed to its principles of diversity and inclusion by condemning the presence of Nikki Haley on our campus…” The group signatories included “Students for Justice in Palestine [at UH], Students for a Democratic Society, CoogSlam, Poetry Community and Slam Team, Muslim Student Association, Youth Empowerment Alliance, Refugee Advancement through Humanitarian Aid, Palestinian Youth Movement Houston, Palestine Solidarity Committee, Austin, TX, Dallas Palestine Coalition, Students of East Africa, Ahlul Bayt Student Organization, National Lawyers Guild Student Chapter at UHLC [and] Students for Justice in Palestine at UT San Antonio.”

SJP disrupted an Students Supporting Israel (SSI) event on campus entitled “Indigenous Peoples Unite,” with three speakers from the Armenian, Jewish, and Kurdish communities, by storming the room, ripping down Armenian and Jewish flags, chanting loudly, dancing, and denigrating the panelists. During panelist Dario Ouliguian’s talk about being a survivor of the Armenian genocide, one student walked up to Ouliguian, ripped down the “mother f—king” Armenian flag, and threw Ouliguian’s notes away and yelled in his face, then placed the flag around his shoulders and refused to return it. Additional anti-Israel activists then surrounded the entire room playing loud music and dancing and clapping in front of the panelists, using blow horns and whistles and chanting “free, free Palestine, Palestine will be free,” “We don’t want 2 states, we want ’48,” “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” “No peace on stolen land, justice is our demand” “Protesting is not a crime, free free free Palestine,” as well as “Israel is a terrorist state!” The activists then ripped down the Israeli flag. When Ouliguian tried to return to the microphone, the group started screaming, “F—k white supremacy!” Campus police were called to remove the protesters, who shut down the event and occupied the room for roughly 15 minutes. Upon removal, one student yelled, “UCLA is on the side of racism! And the terrorist state of Israel!” Loud chanting and screaming with the megaphone continued in the hall outside the event which clearly continued to disrupt the event and made it nearly impossible to hear the presenters.

A divestment resolution was discussed in a ten-hour student government meeting. 12 senators wanted to move forward with the resolution but were blocked by 13 other senators. The resolution was stalled in the Associated Students Senate when the 12 senators and proxies who were in favor of moving the resolution forward did not return to the over 10-hour-long meeting after a brief recess in protest of the 13 senators who did not want the resolution to move forward. This was the fifth time in six years that a BDS resolution was brought to the student government. The resolution is now expected to be pushed either to the next A.S. meeting, an emergency meeting or an email vote.

An open letter in the campus paper called on the board of Trustees to open up its investment portfolio in connection with a past BDS vote. The open letter stated, ” In 2014, the DePaul University administration was petitioned by pro-Palestine students to divest from pro-Israel investments, amidst opposition from pro-Israel lobbyists on campus. Even though the vote was successful in pulling funds from these causes, the board of trustees still maintains the confidentiality of their investment portfolio. Though this is within the university’s legal rights, a university that claims to be morally driven should – on principle – make their morally consequential behavior public to be held accountable for said behavior.”

Neo-nazi posters found near campus are part of a national postering effort by The Stormer Book Club, which is affiliated with the Daily Stormer, a Nazi website. A BDS resolution that was previously tabled due to Jewish concerns was revisted and discussed at the CUNY USS Plenary Meeting. The resolution was voted down. According to a source familiar with the meeting’s events, USS representatives reaffirmed that the “proposed” resolution from the Civics Affairs Committee meeting on April 27 did not come from the USS, but was brought in from a student and handed to the USS. Additionally, the Civics Affairs Committee agreed to make an effort to find an alternative time to hold their deliberation meetings so as not to hold them on a Friday night, Shabbat. There was a suggestion raised during the meeting that each CUNY campus take their constituents’ concerns as a campus to push BDS resolutions on a campus to campus basis.

An Israel-related event with Reservists on Duty that was hosted by the College Republicans was disrupted by several anti-Israel protesters, including one with a bullhorn, who screamed anti-Zionist chants so loudly that the event had to be stopped for the duration of the chanting. According to a recording of the event, although the Dean of Students and at least three police officers were present during the disruption, the screaming was allowed to continue for over three minutes, until protesters were finally escorted from the room. Chanting during the event consisted of, “IDF, What do you say? How many kids have you killed today?” “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free,” “All the Walls Have got to go, From Palestine to Mexico,” and “Free, free Palestine.” Protesters also held signs saying, “IDF not welcome.” After protesters were asked to leave by police, the chanting continued loudly outside the event, including chants of “Long live the intifada.” The five speakers from Reservists on Duty and the organizers were given a police escort for their protection at the end of the event. This is the third year in a row that anti-Zionist protesters have attempted to disrupt and shut down a student-hosted Israel-related event on campus.

May 2, 2018 – STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY –
SJP released a statement to the community that denigrated Zionists on campus, denied Jews self-determination as well as demonized and delegitimized Israel. The statement said, “Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) is and will always be against Zionism…Zionism is the creation of a Jewish state on top of the pre-existing Palestinian state, and maintaining such a state. Zionism started in Europe and was a political ideology created by European Jews to ‘come back’ to land which they have no physical claim to for over 2,000 years. This ideology is no different from White Man’s Burden or Manifest Destiny, which are all the justifications of colonialism and imperialism…We will always stand against any Zionist group, and to eradicate this practice, just like any other form of racism, we will fight against it. If MSA held programs in favor of ISIS, we would be the first ones to protest them…Israel is no different from apartheid South Africa, and the world came together to condemn apartheid and denominations of racism, ethnic cleansing, colonialism, and imperialism. Thus, why should Stony Brook University allow Israeli programs to be under the guise of interfaith?…In response to the quote mentioned from the community pledge to accept and respect the identity of students, we ask the university: if there were Nazis, white nationalists, and KKK members on campus, would their identity have to be accepted and respected? Absolutely not. Then why would we respect the views of Zionists? Regarding our statement about wanting a proper Jewish organization, any proper organization regardless of religion, should not prescribe to any denomination of racism, colonialism, or imperialism, including Zionism… we want to send a message to Chaplain Sanaa Nadim. You have reached a heinous level of betrayal to the Palestinian people by working with and aiding Zionists on their endeavors. For 3 years we have been on this campus, you have…helped Hillel normalize their Zionist agenda…We will work tirelessly to ensure that Stony Brook University’s MSA has a chaplain that properly represents the Palestinian liberation movement….Now, to the student body, we implore you to rise up and take part in demonstrations with us, express your qualms for states that are killing our people, and always fight for the right of the indigenous against these oppressive regimes. Together, we can create a domino effect to ensure Zionism is an extinct ideology.”

University employee Eric Clopper made antisemitic comments and stripped to the nude as part of his one-man production “Sex & Circumcision: An American Love Story,” during the public performance he gave in Sanders Theatre. According to videos of the performance, his comments included, “The Jews—I know, I’m one of them—are an unmasked genital mutilation cult. That is why we are so clannish. It is our shared delusion of superiority that we must uphold to maintain our perverted tribal identity.” He also claimed “the Jews” had “raped” him and that Judaism has a “demonstrably evil influence” on the United States. He vowed he would “expend every breath in my body” to tear “this covenant to pieces.” He stated that his perfomance marked the “official declaration of war on our f**king covenant” and promised he would recruit an “army from our generation to wage it.” He also said he will “force” Jewish individuals to “comply” with his demand they stop circumcising their children.

We refuse to let such a disturbing public celebration of colonialism and apartheid on our campus and in our park go by without a response…help us show that NYU and New York City stand in solidarity with the Palestinian liberation struggle and demand for the right of return.” During the protest, “Intifada, Intifada, Long live the Intifada” was chanted as well as “Get up / Get down / No apartheid in this town.” One protester held a sign saying, “Zionism = Racism.” A protester stole an Israel flag and brought it to the protesters. It was ripped, stomped on, defaced with pink chalk and then burned. Two student protesters were arrested at the event that were involved with stealing and burning the flag. Also during the protest, a protester sneaked in during the singing of “Hatikva,” forcefully and hurtfully grabbed the microphone from the girl who had been holding it, and shouted, “Free Palestine!” SJP’s president explained the behavior of the protesters to Washington Square News saying, “We’re not going to let them stand by and support Zionism. The Center for International Studies held the event, “70 Years: Israel-Palestine – Reflections & Forecasts.” During the first panel, entitled “Looking Back,” panelist Salim Tamari of Birzeit University supported a letter that he quoted from concerning an event at MIT “commemorating 70 years of Nakba and 70 years of the declaration of Israel.” The letter that was quoted contained statements that demonized and delegitimized Israel, including, “surely you [Israel] should be proud of your achievement. You’ve established your state on land that belongs to the Palestinians. You were not satisfied to share their land with them, so you had to evict them to have your own Jewish state. You did that by resorting to brutal force and in some cases, massacres.” During the second panel, entitled “Looking Ahead,” panelist Leila Farsakh of UMass Boston claimed that “[Oslo] redefined Israeli colonization. It did not end it. It redefined it and created an apartheid reality as you can see from this map. I don’t think Israel ever wanted to create an apartheid reality. It ended up creating it because it wanted a land without a people but there was no place to get rid of the Palestinian people. So this apartheid reality is a reality that we are now in a one-state reality.” Farsakh further claimed, “[Israelis] excuse the Nakba because of the Holocaust. It [the ‘apartheid reality’] also implies that Israelis have to face the challenge that Israeli [sic] cannot be both Jewish and democratic.” Finally, Farsakh expressed support for BDS, stating that “the Palestinians …have embarked…on a non-violent resistance…they [during the Gaza March for Return] are just burning tires and they are trying, and they reconnected with the right of return…What I find most impressive is that over the past six years there has been a policy of non-violent resistance whether with the BDS movement or [with the march] in Gaza.”

The Student Association Senate approved a BDS measure in an 18-6 vote, with 6 abstentions, in a secret paper ballot. During the voting process, two “whereas” clauses were introduced into the bill: one reaffirms Israel’s right to exist while the other affirms that both Palestinians and Israelis have the right to safety, security, and self-determination. Five senators opposed this addition to include Israel’s right to exist, and two abstained. The resolution quoted Baleka Mtebe as saying that Israel is “far worse than apartheid South Africa” and Mandla Mandela’s claiming that “Israel is the worst apartheid regime.” The resolution went on to claim, “Israel has used the F-16 to deliberately kill Palestinian civilians.” The resolution concluded by stating that “the Senate calls on the university to begin the process of divestment from The Boeing Company, Caterpillar Inc., CEMEX, Elbit Systems Ltd., General Electric, Lockheed Martin, Motorola Solutions, Inc., Northrop Grumman, and The Raytheon Company within the 2018-2019 academic year.” The resolution was endorsed by “Queer Radicals, GWU Students for Justice in Palestine, GWU Muslim Students’ Association, Jewish Voice for Peace GWU, Young Democratic Socialists of America GW, GWU Students for Indigenous and Native American Rights, Association of Queer Women and Allies, No Lost Generation GWU and GW Arab Student Association.”https://www.jta.org/2018/04/24/news-opinion/george-washington-u-student-senate-passes-israel-divestment-resolution

We refuse to take part in these light hearted activities because they whitewash horrendous incessant violence against Palestinians.” The statement then further affirms, “We partner with Students for Justice in Palestine to make a statement against Zionism and for a world free of structural oppression. We understand that Zionism is an oppressive political ideology. We also understand that Zionism and Judaism are distinct and not one and the same. We criticize Israeli state policy, and at the same time we reaffirm our opposition to all forms of racism, including antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Black racism. Aryeh: Columbia Students Association for Israel described the ways the student government treated its group unfairly during the divestment voting process, stating, “From the very beginning, this process was dishonest and opaque. The decision to initiate a referendum was made behind closed doors without hearing formally from any pro-Israel students—and in contradiction to repeated assurances that no decision or vote would be made during that session. There are measures in place to protect students from divisive and marginalizing referenda like this one; shockingly, however, SGA failed to invoke those measures by deciding that this referendum was not ‘contentious.’ When Aryeh was finally able to speak at SGA, our one request—for a fair and unbiased referendum—was ignored, as SGA elected to put forward an unsourced text that included CUAD’s arguments and propaganda, in many cases word-for-word…Finally, after securing CUAD an overwhelming advantage in the wording of the referendum, SGA Executive Board unilaterally imposed campaign rules on Aryeh, guaranteeing an unequal playing field.”

Zionist leadership (David Ben Gurion first and foremost) and soldiers introduced and committed crimes against humanity in Palestine just short of what the Nazis did — only minus the crematoriums.” Waletski’s letter was responding to concerns expressed by Jewish students, and he accused the students of “criminal defamation” for expressing their concerns about his antisemitic statements. The caller reportedly said, ‘Jews are terrorists’; ‘We want to kill every Jew on Earth and we will’; ‘Jews are evil’; ‘Every Jew is going to get murdered’; and ‘I’m gonna shoot a Jew with a gun.’ One of the complainants said that ISMI has publicized an upcoming event which may have triggered someone to call in and leave the threats.”

During the event, Spero referenced a news article covering recent activity on campus, saying, “You know and the whole thing about President Wong saying he welcomed Zionists… people from Hillel say that well Zionism is just Jewish national self-determination, that was the phrase they used. And they think to say like Zionists are not welcome is wrong. It should be part of the discourse. And Dr. Abulhadi is quoted as saying it’s a racist, Islamophobic, settler colonialist project, Zionism is… being part of a project like that [Zionism]…take away somebody’s land, arrest them and drive them away is going to twist you…It’s a European narrative, Zionism is a European narrative, anti-Semitism was a European thing. None of it was Arab, none of it was Muslim and yet how it’s twisted and yet how it’s threatening to blow up the whole world. You see how Zionism is setting the world on fire like we can see in Syria right now.” Greene claimed “genocide and psychocide [against Palestinians] is ongoing.” Abdulhadi remarked, “I’m going actually to just make a few points about the whole question of Zionism and the settler colonial project. Echoing some of the stuff my colleagues have said…Ollie Benn, the person [Spero] mention, he is the director of Hillel in San Francisco…he’s been described…in the Zionist press as boots on the ground at San Francisco State, I mean this is a description of war….in my statement criticizing President Wong for welcoming Zionists to campus I said this is a declaration of war against Arabs, Muslims, Palestinians.” Abdulhadi stated, “the Zionist state…actually uses the Holocaust to justify the settler colonial project in Palestine.” Abdulhaid claimed that the Jews of Iraq had something “bombed by the Mossad to force them to go to Israel.” An unidentified speaker claimed that, “deconstruct[ing] this religious construction of a religious state is very important. To break the reasoning of Zionism… Even in their own reasoning Zionism is a form of Jewish self-determination…what kind of conception of self-determination is the self-determination that requires the elimination of another?” Muhtaseb said, “so earlier we had a Zionist person here… Somebody mentioned supremacy earlier that’s supremist logic…It’s the mainstream in Israel.” Misse expressed support of BDS, including an academic boycott.

If these are the values then we really need to do something about it because this is not the San Francisco State I belong to.” Also during the event, Abdulhadi denigrated Jewish texts and Jewish interpretation of those texts stating, “Of course mind you, that the Zionist movement uses a lot of Torah just to justify why it is building the Zionist project in Palestine, yet in the Torah it talks about figs and olives and grapes. The official Facebook page of AMED Studies at SFSU shared a video of AMED’s director, Rabab Abdulhadi, and her husband, Jaime Veve, in conversation with Jess Ghannam and Jamal Dajani (the radio show hosts), that equated Zionism with racism and claimed President Wong catered to private corporation donors instead of the public with his statement apologizing to the Jewish community and clarifying that Zionists are welcome on the campus. Ghannam led with, “Nowhere in the academy in the modern era has a university president made such a blatantly hateful racist xenophobic comment as president Wong of San Francisco State. Recently he publicly came out and said the following, ‘Zionists are welcome at San Francisco State University.’” Abdulhadi replied, “I’m waiting for him to say, white supremacists is welcome, KKK is welcome, David Horowitz is welcome, Richard Spenser is welcome, Neo-Nazis are welcome, homophobes are welcome, misogynists are welcome, why stop only at Zionists? Welcome them all. I mean bring the…whole club. Bring everybody who is right wing and racist, bring them to campus, why only stop at Zionists. I mean this was really huge. An academic program that put a statement out on a university website about that.” She further equated Zionism to racism, stating, “Along with the way in which Zionism…has been presented as trying to sanitize and present it as something that is normalized that is something that is acceptable, that is something that is okay. When we are challenging white supremacy, when we are challenging settler colonialism, when we are challenging apartheid, we challenge all the racism but this [Zionism] is one kind of racism that is sort of exempt and it becomes an exception to the rule of racism.” She demonized Zionism more, stating, “…I was thinking about…the statement of President Wong welcoming Zionists to campus but I was also thinking about how it intersects with the question of colonial feminism and Zionist feminism…[and] the ways in which Zionist feminism actually owns the discussion around Palestine.” Brooke Lober accused Israel of “Israeli-feminist washing and re-washing.” In response to Simona Sharoni’s insistence that previously, pro-Palestinian supporters “did not say you could not be a Zionist and a feminist… It’s not against anyone…it’s…against systems of oppression and people could name Zionism as one of them. But it’s not about that particular community,” Abdulhadi replied, “we have to respond because if we don’t respond then the only discourse that remains is the Zionist discourse or the people who support Zionism… And this is why of the statement that came out from Women and Gender Studies’ academic program at San Francisco State [is important]. We’re still waiting for the rest of our colleagues to come out with statements to say this [Zionism] is not okay. We actually have a problem with saying we [don’t support] racist, exclusivists [Zionists] in the same way we reject white supremacy, neo-nazism, KKK, homophobia…we want people to come up and speak up [against Zionists].” Abdulhadi then talked about the “Jewization of labor not only land” in Israel.

Not Christians and Muslims.” He claimed, “they [Jews] have the audacity to say because of this book that this land belongs to them. That Jews are the chosen ones….inherited…to bring social justice into the world.” He also claimed, “they [Jews] stole Christian Muslim land… Wherever Jews built they built on Arab [land]. Where Arabs once lived, they stole, they ethnically cleansed Christians and Muslims from the land they had lived in for centuries.” In reference to the 1948 war he stated, “They [Jews] tell you what they want you to believe that they were on the eve of annihilation, the eve of another holocaust… So in 1948 it was okay for Jews, for Zionists to say to the British the laws you put in place are Nazi laws and then turn right around in 68 and impose them on Christians and Muslims in the West Bank and Gaza.” He accused Israel of striving for “complete ethnic cleansing that is continuing to this day in Palestine…cleansing Christians.” He claimed, “When you rise up against it as a Christian or a Muslim in this land you’re called a terrorist. This is not terrorism. This is a war of liberation against an occupying, dispossessing, European force.” He went on to state, “they ethnically cleanse, it wasn’t justified in the first place to steal this land, now you steal their cultural possessions. You annihilate, you memoricide, you erase the memory of Christians and Muslims in this land and Judaize it as Nazis Germanized the conquered lands. It’s the same thing.” He said, “Does not a people who are occupied have the right to try to remove their oppressors or occupiers?” He claimed there was a “massacre of Christians and Muslims (in Lebanon)… the Jews surrounded the city, they bombarded it mercilessly from the air from the sea from the land.” He argued, “Hamas launches rockets….What do the Jews have? The most sophisticated advanced weaponry that America could possibly pay for and deliver to them. CWRU Radical Student Union released a statement in response to a proposed divestment resolution that was halted due to antisemitism concerns. The statement said, “March 30th, 2018 — the Undergraduate Student Government executive committee squelched out a resolution by some of its representatives which would seek to pull the university’s funding and partnerships from any companies profiting off the Israel occupation of Palestine, particularly in the settlements. They intentionally denied the legitimacy of the resolution with false claims of ‘anti-semitism,’ further asserting they would refuse its allowance onto the agenda…Case Western Reserve University’s funding and corporation partnerships directly fund apartheid…In doing so, the USG executive committee has declared how they will be remembered by history: complicit in an apartheid…The Radical Student Union stands with the Palestinian people. The occupation is a brutal imperialist project that can no longer be permitted to be supported on American soil. Instead, the hypocrisy falls upon the JLC for trying to join the MRC — a group that ‘recognizes basic human dignity of all persons’ — while voicing support for an apartheid state. One cannot both support human rights and the state of Israel at the same time…Any student group that is remotely committed to protecting minority rights should denounce the state of Israel…any nationalist land claims that are founded on the genocide of a native people should be immediately contested…By these grounds, the state of Israel…makes questionable the status of its own self-determination.”

The Women and Gender Studies Department issued a statement that delegitimized Zionism and demonized Israel, saying, “On February 23rd, President Wong of San Francisco State University sent an email to the entire campus community. In his statement, Wong apologizes for the hurt feelings of Jewish students—represented in his email by a about a dozen student members of Hillel—and emphasizes that “Zionists are welcome” on the campus of SF State. The Women and Gender Studies Department is deeply concerned about the motivation, tenor, and potential effects of this statement…Zionism is not equivalent to Jewishness; anti-Zionism is not anti-semitism. Zionism is a political ideology that supports the state of Israel. It does not represent all Jewish people–nor does Hillel represent all Jewish students. Wong’s statement fails to express concern or support for Palestinian, Arab, and Middle Eastern students and their allies that are harmed by Zionism. We are concerned that such material support for Zionist discourse, evidenced in this statement and previous actions by the university president, outweighs concern for the whole of our campus community…The history and contemporary discourse of racialized gender and sexuality for Jewish people in Zionism is a site of debate and political protest today–especially as the Israeli state’s project of “pinkwashing” is decried by queer activists internationally…feminists are…pointing out how Zionism targets women and families in broader projects of racialized population control. This, among other histories of feminist debate, show that Zionism as a political ideology needs to be up for debate at minimum. In sum, the Department of Women and Gender Studies unequivocally rejects the equation of Zionism with Judaism, and stands by all of our SFSU students and their right to a university committed to intellectual inquiry and social justice.”

Boyle stated that, “the very essence of Zionism requires ethnic cleansing and acts of genocide against the Palestinians,” and claimed, “Israel’s genocidal policy against the Palestinians has been unremitting, extending from before the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948, and is ongoing even now and especially intensifying.” He asked, “do you really think we’re going to get peace between Israel and the Palestinians from three Orthodox Jews?” and answered, “of course not! And to show you how bad it was that in 1991, at the beginning of these peace negotiations, Bush senior put three American Jews in charge of the process…and they even later admitted yes, they always serve as Israel’s Lord, which is true… nothing has changed from 1991 until today, it’s still three American Jews in charge of these so-called peace negotiations serving as lawyers for Israel.” He stressed that “in Gaza today as we speak 1.8 million of Palestinians [are] being treated almost as if they were the Jews at Dachau [former Nazi concentration camp].” Boyle accused Alan Dershowitz of being, “a member of a Mossad committee that approved the murder and assassination of Palestinians,” and the former president of Harvard, Lawrence Summers of being a “die-hard Zionist himself [who] tried to impose his neocon Zionist agenda on Harvard.” He accused other opponents of divestment of being, “die hard racist bigoted Zionists.” Boyle stressed that “the BDS campaign…[and] why we are here tonight [is] to prevent the job [of the] Zionist genocide against the Palestinians that is still going on today including and especially in Gaza.” Boyle claimed, “Congress has [been] completely bought off by the Zionist lobby and the White House these days…there’s no hope there, so we have to take our campaign out [to] the American people.” Finally, Boyle told activists to defend themselves against charges of antisemitism by remarking, “when Zionist attack you, you say yeah, you people are more loyal to Israel than you are to the United States. I’m a loyal American citizen. I’m exercising my First Amendment right.”

An op-ed in The Mac Weekly written by Macalester Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights demonized and delegitimized Israel, stating, “Zionism as an ideology, as a national movement and as a settler colonial project must be examined critically for its compatibility with feminism…Zionism benefits and emerges from a movement that was violent at its very inception…Zionism’s place under the feminist umbrella is an attempt to unveil the violence of a settler colonial project that occured at the expense of Palestinian lives and equality. Zionism should not and can not be defended for its ideological premise of ethno-religious Jewish preservation when it necessitated the displacement of over seven million Palestinians…A feminism that leaves no room for the necessary dismantling of apartheid is merely a reiteration of harmful supremacy. For Palestinian women, Zionism has been a principal part of their violent subjugation since 1948. Therefore, any action in the name of a feminism compatible with Palestinian justice and equality must begin and end in terms of decolonization.”

By purchasing and using the products listed below and by collaborating with universities in Israel, we hold that the University of Utah is acting in compliance with the state of Israel. The University cannot claim to be safe and diverse while supporting apartheid, brutal colonial occupation, and ethnic cleansing in Palestine.” Demands included asking the university to stop purchases from Hewlett-Packard Company as well as Catepillar, and to remove Sabra Hummus from dining shelves. Additionally, the demands called on the University to “ban University placed Israeli flags on campus” because “by displaying the Israeli flag, the University is recognizing and supporting the Israeli state’s occupation of Palestine.” Finally, SDS demanded the University engage in an “academic boycott of Israel. Matthew Heimbach of the white socialist nationalist Traditional Workers Party spoke on campus. During his speech, numerous antisemitic statements building on historical tropes of Jewish power and control were made, including, “I believe the globalists, the Zionist interests hate us primarily because we’re the last ones that fought back. The Second World War was when we fought back. They want to take us out first. Listen to the war drums that are beating…The only people who win when nationalist movements fight each other are oligarchs, bankers, and Jews…How much of our blood was shed in a war where even historians, even the Jewish media can’t make it a way that that was a war that made sense…We understand what we’re facing. The American Empire, NATO the EU, and Zionism, all aimed against us…We’re actually sending the Jew-run Kiev military anti-tank weapons to blow up Russians.” He further went on to detail the Traditional Workers Party’s beliefs, stating, “We are not American Nationalists. America is a problem. We are the solution. The “final solution” you might ask? (audience laughter) to the globalist problem…But yes, to be able to deal with this situation because we’re currently being used as pawns by Zionists…Literally created by Jews and Freemasons to create a country to then get us to destroy the enemies of Zion across the world for the last 200 years…We believe in a strong environmental policy like banning kosher…I hate to break it to folks on wall street, but a hooked-nose banker moving ones and zeros around isn’t labor…Our enemies as a people have never worked…you fight against the Jewish interests and they hate you, but we’re going to have a national bank that’s for our people. It’s not foreign people…We believe in the separation of church and state, of course there is no separation of state and synagogue here in the United States…The position of the Traditional Workers Party is that people of color have a fundamental right to exist just like we do. It’s not a radical statement. They are being used right now by the Jewish oligarch’s capitalist system to wage a war against us…there [was] a placard of an Israeli tank and a Palestinian who had a rock, this kid, he’s six years old standing against the might of the Zionist empire and it’s that same enemy, same barricade. As we’re fighting globalism and imperialism and the Jewish control of our system in other races.” He ended his speech by reminding his supporters to “remember our ideas are normal natural and healthy. I was sitting smoking cigars one time…at the University of Indiana Bloomington in a cigar lounge with some party members and there’s a very high Chinese student rate. And the Chinese students were in there talking about politics…and they were actually laughing at us, they were like, you just let the Jews run your country. Why would you do that, that’s so stupid? I’m like, I know…Remember we as white nationalists are not in conflict with one another, we’re not in conflict with other peoples. We’re in conflict against the establishment, the bankers, the Jewish power structure and the bourgeoisie.”

SJP and the Muslim Student Association held the event, “Discussing Post-Colonialism with Dr. Hatem Bazian.” Dr. Bazian started off his lecture by defining settler-colonialism as, “settler-colonialism is genocide and transfer.” Later in the talk he stated, “Israel is a settler-colonial state…the comparisons [to the U.S.] are there…with the need to push even more Palestinians out.” He additionally answered a question from an audience member about the Jewish historical connection to Israel by re-affirming his stance, remarking, “I know there are some Jews that had relations to Palestine…these were very old historical Jewish communit[ies] but [you need to] distinguish between the local indigenous Palestinian Jews versus settler-colonialism of Zionism that arrives as a European movement into Palestine, adopted and supported by Great Britain in order to implement its own strategy. So I think you are collapsing both, trying to insinuate there is something that is unique relative to the development that took place. Israel to me have followed a settler-colonial project that is identical and similar like the settler-colonial project like America…we need to de-aggregate those to arrive at a clear understanding of what took place.” The audience heartily applauded this response. Finally, he stated, “interfaith dialogue should not be a stamp of approval for apartheid in Israel. For American Muslims…engagement with normalization with Zionism should not be your door for upward mobility in America.”

The description for the event stated, “Following the momentum of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, & Sanctions movement and Massachusetts Against Hewlett-Packard, we are calling on Northeastern to Boycott HP.” According to the Huntington News, the event began with a video produced by JVP, which stated, “People have lots of ideas about what a Jewish state should look like. Some called for equality for all citizens. But what was created, in practice, was institutional discrimination.” SJP also announced it plans to submit a referendum to SGA for Northeastern to end its contract with HP.

Northeastern University School of Law SJP held the event, “The Rebirth of Students For Justice In Palestine At NUSL.” The event description noted the chapters’ SJP goals, which included demonizing and delegitimizing language of Israel and support for BDS, such as: “1) Situate the liberation of Palestine as part of a larger struggle against European settler colonialism in solidarity with Tasmanian Aboriginals, Native Americans, and other indigenous people whose lands are occupied, 2) host educational initiatives highlighting why Israel is as much as European settler colony as French-Algeria, Rhodesia, and Apartheid South Africa, 3) Intellectually challenge the predominant Pro-Israel propaganda at Northeastern’s campus that sanitizes Israel’s colonial violence towards Palestinians, 4) Support the liberation of Palestine through lobbying for Boycott and divestment from Israel and supporting the right of Palestinians to return to their ancestral homeland…THE RACIST COLONIAL ORIGINS OF ISRAEL!…In this kick off event, we will explore the racist colonial origins of the Israeli state through a mock trial of Arthur Balfour…we will explore how early Zionists explicitly described their mission in Palestine as a colonial venture that would serve the interests of British white supremacy.”

The only Jewish senator resigned from the student government citing antisemitism and death threats. In his resignation letter, the senator claimed, “Although my platform consisted of putting the STUDENT back into Student Government, this environment is toxic and has prevented me from fulfilling my obligation to my constituents after a long fight against the status quo. It is clear to see that being Jewish and a Zionist comes with repercussions in Student government ranging from death threats to being alienated in all aspects. I have experienced so much hatred spearheaded by senate leadership in the past few months and I will be doing everything in my power to hold you accountable, it is clear to see that it’s simply not possible to do this in senate.” The death threat the senator is referring to consisted of receiving a message on social media after his opposing the resolution “Hands Off Jerusalem” that read, “You will die by our hands and we will take Jerusalem and fill Palestine with your impure blood. Jerusalem is for us, and death for you.” Additionally, the student senator claimed he was visited by police after someone filed a fake police report claiming he was going to start “another Charlottesville.”

USG passed a highly revised divestment resolution in a secret vote after 5 hours of debate. The motion was watered down in the end to remove almost all BDS-linked references, leaving only a paragraph mentioning past BDS-linked votes that had passed at other schools in the final version that referred to them only as, “resolutions calling for the divestment from companies engaged in human rights violations.” The majority of speakers during public comments prior to the vote spoke against the resolution and many cited its antisemitic undertones. Before going into final voting for the resolution, a student proposed an amendment to the resolution that said, “USG condemns BDS and all that it stands for.” That resolution failed.

A member of Oregon State University’s student government expressed racist and antisemitic sentiments in an interview with the campus paper stating “whites have greater intelligence than other racial or ethnic groups and…Jews control most important institutions in modern life.” He described himself as an “ethno-nationalist” that believed the “future is one of race-based nationalism, where different racial groups exist independently of one another.” The student was arrested on suspicion of posting racist bumper stickers on cars off-campus at a local co-op grocery store as well as antisemitic fliers on the cars’ windshields, which were described as, “stuff straight out of Nazi Germany.” A search warrant at his house recovered bumper stickers and antisemitic fliers that matched the ones used in the off-campus incident.

The student government discussed a surprise resolution, “Hands off Jerusalem.” Statements in the text of the resolution contained antisemitic language that denied Jews self-determination and demonized Israel, including, “Whereas, The Balfour act was instituted in 1916 [sic] by Britain, which promised a ‘homeland’ for European Jews on Palestinian land…While the SG Senate affirms its respect for all religions, it refutes the Israeli justification for Palestinian occupation under the religious context of a ‘promised land’ that is repeatedly provided.” The resolution also falsely accused Israel of “atrocities…committed against the Palestinian people.”

An article in the student-run school newspaper demonized and delegitimized Israel, stating, “ethnic cleansing is a constant threat…Ahed’s show-trial and possible imprisonment reflects the larger system of apartheid within the Israeli legal system…For anyone living under settler-colonialism, a system that is inherently violent, the only logical reaction is to defend themselves by any means necessary. Ahed’s hands should not be tied for slapping an occupying soldier whose very presence is a threat to her existence. The violence of the colonized Palestinians will never be equal to the violence of the colonizing Israelis who have been imperializing and ethnically cleansing Palestine since 1948… For Palestinians living under a settler-colonial regime, just existing is an act of resistance, and slapping an occupying soldier is another step towards liberation.”

An op-ed published in the school paper demonized Israel and Zionism stating, “Special efforts are being made to show that Zionism cannot possibly be racist by AIPAC-sponsored trips for students at historically black colleges. It’s like the proverbial free lunch—there’s no such thing…Even the before-and-after survey from Hillel—’Do you consider Israel a militarized society? Do you consider Israel a diverse society?’ etc.—intimated the trip’s apparent goal of disproving the growing belief among college students that Israel is a racist, apartheid state…Besides eating Palestinian food in Hillel, enjoying land taken from Palestinians is the would-be free lunch travelers must recognize—by simply being there, you stand on land that was and continues to be cleansed of its indigenous population.”

Arab and Muslim American Studies at the University of Michigan, Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies and Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum held the event, “CMENAS Lecture. Inter/Nationalism: Decolonizing Native America and Palestine – Steven Salaita, BDS Activist and Independent Scholar.” The advertisement for the event on the university website states, “Salaita offers a fascinating inside account of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement—which, among other things, aims to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land. In doing so, he emphasizes BDS’s significant potential as an organizing entity as well as its importance in the creation of intellectual and political communities that put Natives and other colonized peoples such as Palestinians into conversation.” During the event, Salaita delegitimized and demonized Israel and Zionism throughout that talk, stating, “Israel is a settler colonial society. Its founding ideology, Zionism, was always trained on acts of colonialism and it continues in those pursuits today.” He also claimed that settlements produce a “system of apartheid.” He claimed, “the Zionist movement purports to replace one population with another population and if you don’t have the chest for that sort of work right then you don’t understand the ideology correctly.” He additionally claimed that Zionism is “unjustifiable.” He further went on to “define” Zionism, stating, “I know that there are different definitions of Zionism, but I’m really not interested in spending a lot of time parsing what they are. To me, Zionism is a belief whether expressed through a liberal or a conservative paradigm that such a thing as a Jewish majority state ought to exist at the expense of those who can lay claim to that land historically.” According to an article covering the event, Salaita also claimed that “to work against Zionism is to work against injustice everywhere” and that during the Q & A, a Jewish student expressed that comments made in Salaita’s book were antisemitic against Jews, when Salaita describes American Jews with the phrase “McMansions and shopping malls.” Salaita responded by defending the phrase, saying, “I will stand by the line insofar as the fact that I am pointing to the distinct class dynamic that is in play vis-a-vis Palestinians. This is a description of college students that gets proffered all the time.”
