TAKE ACTION:
1) Send your own letter to UC President Napolitano (president@ucop.edu) reiterating the requests of the 176 Faculty Members/47 Groups and 590 UC Alumni to:
- Describe how the Regents Policy on Course Content works in conjunction with the UC Policy on Academic Freedom and clarify when the “advancement of personal interest” and “political indoctrination” constitute misuse. According to UC Policy, indoctrination is not protected under academic freedom.
- Direct all UC Chancellors to urge faculty responsible for overseeing course content to ensure that all courses comply with the Regents Policy on Course Content.
2) Share the 176 Faculty Members/47 Groups’ letter and the 590 UC Alumni letter on social media.
3) Comment on (and share!) articles in The Daily Californian, Algemeiner, Tower, JNS, and Cleveland Jewish News.
In an AMCHA-coordinated letter, 176 faculty members and 47 religious, civil rights, education and research organizations representing thousands of concerned students, parents and alumni wrote this week to University of California President Janet Napolitano demanding she stop faculty from using the classroom as a pulpit for anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist political advocacy and activism.
The letter pointed out that recent approval of a blatantly one-sided and politically-motivated anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic course at UC Berkeley and a similar course offered last year at UC Riverside “…suggest that the faculty members responsible for overseeing course content, particularly at the departmental level, are failing to exercise due diligence in reviewing and approving courses either because they share the anti-Zionist political perspective of the proselytizing instructors and faculty and condone the promotion of that perspective in the classroom, or because they hope to avoid the controversy that rejecting the courses could initiate.”
The letter additionally noted that on many UC campuses, entire departments, including department chairs tasked with approving courses, are dominated by instructors who have publicly endorsed a boycott of Israeli universities and scholars, and regularly use university funds and academic programming to promote BDS, a movement that world leaders, scholars of anti-Semitism and virtually the entire Jewish community recognize as anti-Semitic.
To properly address the issue, Napolitano was asked to take two immediate steps:
- Describe how the Regents Policy on Course Content works in conjunction with the UC Policy on Academic Freedom and clarify when the “advancement of personal interest” and “political indoctrination” constitute misuse. According to UC Policy, indoctrination is not protected under academic freedom.
- Direct all UC Chancellors to urge faculty responsible for overseeing course content to ensure that all courses comply with the Regents Policy on Course Content.

The 176 Faculty Member/47 Groups’ letter was followed this week by an alumni letter drafted by Alums for Campus Fairness, signed by nearly 600 UC alumni, that asked the same steps of UC President Napolitano. The alumni letter stressed that, “[w]hile the extramural expression of anti-Israel and even anti-Semitic views may be protected by the First Amendment, faculty and students do not have the right to use the classroom to recruit for their anti-Zionist/anti-Semitic cause…UC has important and vital policies designed to ensure that faculty and student instructors do not abuse the great pedagogical responsibility with which they have been entrusted. Accordingly, we urge you and the Board of Regents to put an end to the misuse of the classroom by certain faculty and student instructors to indoctrinate their students into their chosen cause.”

October 26, 2016 – OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY –
OSU Divest held the event, “Why Feminists Should Support OSU Divest.”

October 24, 2016 – PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY –
The student senate passed a divestment resolution (with a majority vote 22-2-1) that called for divestment from HP, Motorola, Caterpillar, and G4S. The resolution referred to the right of return as one of the reasons for divesting, which would effectively eliminate Israel as a Jewish state. The resolution additionally stated, “the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land has been entrenched since 1948.” Speakers delegitimized Israel, referring to Israel as apartheid during public comments explicitly remarking, “Israel is apartheid.”

An orange Star of David with the word “Juden” underneath it was spray painted on an off-campus student housing building. “Juden” is the German word for Jews, and the graffiti is direct Holocaust imagery

A swastika drawn with blood was discovered in a residence hall elevator.
