TARGETING JEWISH STUDENTS AND STAFF: GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
HISTORICAL
3/30/16 – A hockey player tweeted an antisemitic message in anticipation of an upcoming game with Jewish fraternity AEPi. The tweet stated, “Playoff (intramural) hockey tonight as the [Ghost Bears] take on the losers of AEPi. I’ll be damned if we lose to a bunch of Jewish frat kids.#Heil” Utilization of the reference to “Heil” indicates sympathy with the genocidal Nazi regime whose slogan was “Heil Hitler.”
GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
HISTORICAL
2/5/16 – A swastika was found carved out of snow on a car outside a Temple University student housing building.
ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION:DENYING JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION;
DEMONIZATION;
DELEGITIMIZATION
4/20/17 – SJP held the event, “Lamis Deek: The Oslo Accords & NGO’s in Palestine.” During the event, Deek denied Jewish self-determination, as well as demonized and delegitimized Israel throughout with remarks such as, “There is a distinct difference between settler-colonialism and Zionist settler-colonialism… Zionist settler-colonialism… was inspired by white racist colonialism so it was both racist and colonial…[and] had to be an exclusively Jewish population… And it’s important when we think about it that way, that we then deal with what it means to dismantle Zionism. So from its inception, Zionism actually required a final solution for the Palestinians.” Deek referred to Israel as the “Zionist entity” throughout her talk, explaining that she “cannot recognize Israel” because “for me when you say Palestine I mean all of historic Palestine.” Deek further defined her vision for Palestinian liberation as the complete end of Israel and Jewish self-determination stating that liberation means, “….first and foremost the return of every Palestinian refugee and their descendants to their original homes and not just, yeah you have the right to return, but the implementation of that…which means that the people residing in the homes of Palestinians would be given a notice and that notice gives them 6 months to decide what to do…so the return and relocation of Palestinian refugees to their original homes, lands businesses and factories and of course, the dismantling of every Zionist institution, Zionist educational institutions…all of that. And, Palestine being restored to its original geographical integrity, Palestine 1948, able to control all of its borders…able to integrate into the Arab region. That would be what we consider Palestinian liberation with Jerusalem as its capitol.” Deek finished her talk by demonizing Israel further saying that, “re-centering Israeli torture and exportation of those practices….to the US and internationally is critical” and that “they [Israeli’s] are such little monsters, right, that there were Israeli civil society organizing barbeques outside of the prisons.”
DELEGITIMIZATION 4/20/16 – As part of “Israeli Apartheid Week”, SJP erected an “apartheid wall” on campus. The advertisement for the wall falsely accused Israel of apartheid, and stated that its purpose was to “protest the apartheid and colonialism of the Israeli state against the Palestinian people.”A speaker stood outside the mock “apartheid wall” and shouted that Jews are using their privilege to “become the oppressors”, the “same privilege that…kept Jews in concentration camps” (alluding that Jews have now become Nazis).
CONDONING TERRORISM1/27/16 – Four temple SJP members held up signs in support of convicted terrorist, Rasmea Odeh. One sign read, “Support Palestinian Right to Resist.” In the context of Rasmea Odeh, this sign in particular condones violence.
DELEGITIMIZATION;
BDS ACTIVITY (BDS EVENT)
3/25/15 – Temple SJP held a flash mob event in which Israel is falsely accused of being apartheid and BDS is promoted.
BDS ACTIVITY:BDS EVENT11/12/2015 – Temple SJP SJP attended the “million student march” rally and brought forth the issue of divestment, demanding Temple sever all ties with companies that support or benefit from the “illegal military occupation of Palestine.” They also called for the university to involve itself in endeavors to support Palestinians and to criticize U.S. Foreign Policy.

Jadaliyya – Interview with Temple Students for Justice in Palestine
(Description note, “Our SJP chapter focuses on anti-Zionism, which is the principle guiding our organizing, and the other side of the coin of our ultimate goal, national liberation for the people of Palestine. We do not believe anti-occupation politics are sufficient in addressing Israeli settler-colonialism, which encompasses not just the West Bank, but also historic Palestine. We understand that Zionism is not just an oppressive ideology, but a system of racism and colonialism that robs the Palestinian people of their fundamental human rights. We agree with Edward Said’s analysis that “Zionism. . . [is] a movement for colonial settlement in the Orient.” In opposing Zionism, we oppose racism and we oppose colonialism in all of its forms. Temple SJP is anti-Zionist because we believe anti-imperialism is a necessary stance we must take if we want to see any shift in discourse and movement-building in the United States. By making people conscious of the oppression Zionism causes, and by opposing colonialism, racism, and imperialism in all its forms, we are challenging people to think critically about empire and neoliberalism. We believe the time for Palestine solidarity has never been more critical in the United States than it is now, and that it is necessary to take advantage of this moment to expose the public to imperialism and the struggle against it. Only from this energy and momentum, we will be able to build a powerful internationalist movement for Palestine in the United States and the rest of the world…. Our faculty advisor is Khalid Blankinship, professor of religion at Temple and an internationally renowned scholar in Islamic Studies. However, we do not receive particular support from faculty at Temple. If we are ever supported by faculty, it is tacitly given, because most faculty are forced to be neutral and apolitical. This is largely due to Temple’s increasing corporatism, which creates an anti-intellectual environment and makes it difficult for professors to be involved in political organizing without fearing for their jobs. For example, a couple years ago, we lost the support of a tenured professor because he was threatened by the Anti-Defamation League. Dr. Anthony Monteiro, our mentor, was a professor in African American Studies at Temple for years, but was fired for criticizing Temple’s gentrification of his neighborhood and community. Entire departments in the College of Liberal Arts have been shut down or have lost funding. It was only recently that adjunct faculty were allowed to unionize, and that was due to coalition work on campus. “)

April 13, 2015: Jewish Journal – The effective way to combat anti-Israel activity on campus: Public relations (Description note, “There has been an incredible growth of anti-Semitism on college campuses in North America. Too often anti-Israel sentiment is simply a veiled and more culturally appropriate form of anti-Semitism. ..This past October, swastikas were painted on the Jewish fraternity house at Emory University in Atlanta, just one day after Yom Kippur, the holiest Jewish day of the year. In May 2014, it was discovered that professors at Temple University were participating in a listserv that contained anti-Israel and anti-Semitic rhetoric, including a denial of the Holocaust. And this March, a student at UCLA was initially rejected from applying to the Student Council’s Judicial Board because she was Jewish. Much of this anti-Semitism stems from anti-Israel sentiment — or possibly vice versa; regardless, people feel emboldened these days to express anti-Israel and anti-Semitic views.”)
