11/12/15 – Hunter College SJP was one of 10 local SJP chapters endorsing an advertisement for a rally that contained several classic and contemporary antisemitic tropes: it called CUNY’s leadership “the Zionist administration” and claimed that the administration “reproduces settler-colonial ideology throughout CUNY through Zionist content of education”; it suggested that the administration’s ties to israel were responsible for tuition hikes; and it claimed that the birthright trips and study abroad programs in Israel were in “occupied Palestine,” effectively denying the existence of the Jewish state. In addition, one of the endorsers’ demands included on the advertisement was that CUNY “divests from Israel, companies that maintain the Zionist occuption.”

    In the News ?

    March 15, 2016:
Forward – When ‘Israel Apartheid Week’ Comes to Campus, Some Find Silence Is Most Eloquent (Description note, “Last week, at a panel discussion at Hunter held as part of Israel Apartheid Week and International Women’s Day, Students for Justice in Palestine student leader Nerdeen Kiswani accused Israel of using “mass rapes of Palestinian women” as part of a campaign to “perpetrate genocide” on the Palestinian people. “Israel is a state that is built on murder and mass rape of Palestinian women,” said Kiswani, who also has called for an intifada, or Palestinian uprising, against Israel. The panel was moderated Saadia Toor, an associate professor of sociology at CUNY. The accusation went unanswered and Kiswani was applauded for her remarks. About 65 people were present for the event.”)

    February 24, 2016:
New York Post – ‘Jew haters’ spread fear at CUNY colleges
(Description note, “Among the incidents cited by the group: At John Jay College, which specializes in criminal justice, Jewish students have been the target of so many slurs that at lease three have transferred. One John Jay administrator responded to a Jewish student’s concerns by saying, “What are these white kids complaining about?” On Nov. 12 at Hunter College, during a demonstration for free tuition, Jewish students were denounced as “racist sons of bitches,” “fascists” and “Nazis” and were greeted with comments such as “Jews out of CUNY.” One student tweeted at the time, “Full-blown anti-Semitism allowed at my college . . . I witnessed this and froze in fear.” At Brooklyn College, the pro-Palestinian group disrupted a faculty meeting last week and called a professor wearing a yarmulka a “Zionist pig.” Brooklyn College slammed the “hateful” comments and the disruption. At The College of Staten Island, a pro-Palestinian demonstrator told a Jewish student last November, “I don’t hug murderers.” Swastikas also defaced the college’s desks and walls.”)

Join Hunter SJP, CUNY4Palestine, and International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN) as we discuss how the Palestinian struggle relates to the struggle for access to education in CUNY, and how we can not divorce the fight against the privatization and militarization of education with international solidarity with oppressed peoples. Speakers on the panel: – Nerdeen Kiswani: Chair of NYC Students for Justice in Palestine – Christopher Stone: Associate Professor of Arabic and Head of the Arabic Program at Hunter College; member of CUNY4Palestine – Max Ajl: Contributer for Jacobin Magazine and Jadaliyya; member of International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network”)

The group referred to those who run the City University of New York (CUNY) as a “Zionist administration,” a framing clearly intended to make Zionism a derogatory word through implicitly linking ‘Zionists’ to financial challenges that students on campus face and invoking a classic anti-Semitic stereotype which blames Jews for the financial woes of others.”)

(Description note, “Joint Statement of Hunter College President Jennifer Raab, USG President Chika Onyejiukwa and Hunter College Senate Chair Sandra Clarkson in response to hate speech used at Campus Rally – We, the President of Hunter College, the President of Undergraduate Student Government  and Chair of the Hunter College Senate, on behalf of our campus constituencies, strongly condemn anti-Semitic comments made at a rally last night seeking to exclude members of our campus community based solely on their identity. As the Chancellor said in remarks today, CUNY is “a place of inclusion, not exclusion.”  While we are committed to the right of free speech and free expression for all within our campus community, there is no place for hate speech and other acts of bigotry, harassment, intimidation, exclusion and intolerance based on an individual’s beliefs and backgrounds.  Such behavior is unacceptable on our campus.  Hunter must be a community where all express their views and opinions, without personally attacking others based on who they are and what they believe.

J Space News – CUNY Administration Makes Clear Anti-Semitism Has No Place on Its Campuses
(Description note, “The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today commended the administration of the City University of New York (CUNY) for issuing a statement which made clear that “invoking discriminatory language reeking of thinly veiled bigotry, prejudice, anti-Semitism or other behavior” is inconsistent with its mission. The CUNY statement was issued by Frank Sanchez, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs regarding the disturbing rhetoric from the New York City chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). The group invoked anti-Semitic stereotypes by referring to those who run CUNY as a “Zionist administration” in the lead up to the Million Student March, a national day of protest over tuition fees, student debt and wages for campus workers with over 100 universities and colleges participating. “We commend CUNY for stepping up to the plate and making clear that the anti-Semitic rhetoric espoused by SJP has absolutely no place on its campuses,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “We can appreciate CUNY’s affirmation of First Amendment Rights, but at the same time reiterating that hateful language is unacceptable.”)
