Campus Monitor - Case Western Reserve University

Student Voices

  • April 6, 2018 – Case Western Reserve University Students (511 Students Signed a Petition) – “While many students and faculty will be off-campus to participate in this religious observance with their families, a group of [CWRU] students and faculty will be campaigning to promote a resolution in our student government that threatens Jewish life on campus and targets Israeli communities. By inviting speakers to [GA] during the holiday, the authors severely limit the chance to have a fair discussion of their legislation.  Introducing a divestment resolution on a major holiday is a tactic seen at other schools by groups with similar aims. We, the students of [CWRU], find this disrespect to a major holiday disappointing.” Read more

    ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    4/12/18 – The CWRU Radical Student Union painted a large delegitimizing message on “The Spirit Wall” in support for a BDS resolution (27-04) that said, “Admin + USG Support Apartheid in Palestine.” An explanatory message of their actions read, “The student body will not be forced to implicitly support the apartheid in Palestine by funding companies that build and maintain the occupation of Palestine by the Israeli government. The Radical Student Union supports the Palestinian cause, including the advocacy for Boycott Divest and Sanction. Resolution 27-04 which would divest the University from these companies that make the occupation possible must be supported at all costs. We will not stop until Palestine is free.”
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    3/30/18 – CWRU Radical Student Union released a statement in response to a proposed divestment resolution that was halted due to antisemitism concerns. The statement said, “March 30th, 2018 — the Undergraduate Student Government executive committee squelched out a resolution by some of its representatives which would seek to pull the university’s funding and partnerships from any companies profiting off the Israel occupation of Palestine, particularly in the settlements. They intentionally denied the legitimacy of the resolution with false claims of ‘anti-semitism,’ further asserting they would refuse its allowance onto the agenda…Case Western Reserve University’s funding and corporation partnerships directly fund apartheid…In doing so, the USG executive committee has declared how they will be remembered by history: complicit in an apartheid…The Radical Student Union stands with the Palestinian people. The occupation is a brutal imperialist project that can no longer be permitted to be supported on American soil. The Undergraduate Student Government and Case Western Reserve are complicit in the spilled blood of Palestine; history will not remember you fondly.”
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    3/25/18 – Members of CWRU Undergraduate Student Government introduced BDS legislation and, according to an AMCHA submission, tried to promote it by having a one-sided debate at an Undergraduate Student Government meeting and by inviting the anti-Israel faculty who helped write the resolution come to speak about it. The resolution was only sent out in an internal student government email and not publicized. The resolution delegitimizes Israel with the false accusation of “apartheid.”
    CONDONING TERRORISM;
    DEMONIZATION
    1/19/17 – CWRU Radical Student Union re-screened the film, “The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War in the United States.” In the film, several speakers condoned terrorism against Israelis by justifying all violence against Israel, including acts of terrorism against Israeli citizens, as legitimate “resistance.” Many of the speakers demonized Israel, falsely accusing the Israeli government of “terrorism,” “murderous attacks,” and “acting like a monster,” and calling Israeli soldiers’ actions “inhumane” and “brutal.”
    CONDONED TERRORISM;
    DEMONIZATION
    9/21/16 – CWRU Radical Student Union held a screening of the film, “The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War in the United States.” In the film, several speakers condoned terrorism against Israelis by justifying all violence against Israel, including acts of terrorism against Israeli citizens, as legitimate “resistance.” Many of the speakers demonized Israel, falsely accusing the Israeli government of “terrorism,” “murderous attacks,” and “acting like a monster,” and calling Israeli soldiers’ actions “inhumane” and “brutal.”
    BDS ACTIVITY: BDS VOTE 4/10/18 – A BDS resolution was tabled indefinitely during a student government general assembly meeting when the authors brought the resolution up to put as an agenda item. A discussion was called on the matter, and the student government voted with more than the 2/3 needed to table the issue indefinitely for this semester.
    CALLS FOR BDS 9/22/16 – The day after CWRU Radical Student Union held a film screening that demonized Israel, chalking was found the next day on campus that called for BDS.
